NEW DELHI, Dec 9: Only two days after asserting that he himself would lead the Congress, party president Sitaram Kesri today changed track and handed over a letter to Sonia Gandhi along with a bouquet on her 52nd birthday, asking her to lead the Congress campaign in the coming Lok Sabha election. The party has thus formalised its quot;Sonia laoquot; campaign.

The Congress president8217;s request comes in the wake of a feeling among party leaders that lack of a charismatic leader could hamper the party8217;s prospects in the polls.

Kesri led a long queue of Congressmen including Congress Working Committee CWC members, All India Congress Committee AICC office-bearers, MPs, ex-MPs and others to 10, Janpath, and promptly handed over the letter. The letter apparently invokes the legacy of Indira and Rajiv Gandhi and requests Sonia to take charge of the party.

Kesri, who had recently stated on a private television channel that Sonia8217;s presence would quot;electrifyquot; the masses, is said to have added in the letter that he is not interested in power and would gladly accept if Sonia agrees to be involved in the campaign. This is being viewed as probably the last attempt by the Congress to beef up its electoral efforts. So far, Kesri and sundry other party leaders have been saying that Sonia must lead the party but the appeal has been largely ignored. But with a formal letter being sent now, Kesri expects a reply to his request.

And the big hope is that she will not say no in her reply to Kesri. Kesri8217;s step today comes after the CWC decided to send a formal appeal after many informal ones. But some MPs went a step ahead today. Said some southern MPs today, on the condition of anonymity: quot;We requested that Soniaji choose a constituency of her choice in the next election. She could then be elected the Congress Parliamentary Party leader.quot;
