
JALANDHAR, Aug 6: Punjab today became the 15th state in the country to be uplinked for the regional service of Doordarshan. Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Sushma Swaraj inaugurated the satellite earth station at the Doordarshan Kendra here this evening to establish the serviceInaugurating the station, the minister said the regional service programes originating from the Kendra would now be seen in the countries like Pakistan, Afghanistan, Oman, Qatar and Nepal.
The Minister said the service would help in countering the anti-India propaganda being aired by the neighbouring Pakistan.
Earlier, speaking at the function, Punjab Chief Minister P.S.Badal said that Pakistan was using its electronic media to air negative propaganda against the country. He hoped the new service would help in countering that propaganda.
He called upon the Union Minister to strengthen the electronic media in Punjab to defeat the nefarious designs of Pakistan. He also appealed to the Union Minister to issue instructions to Doordarshan for live broadcast of the celebrations connected with the 300th anniversary of birth of Khalsa Panth.
The earth station has been established at a cost of Rs 8.25 crore.
