CHANDIGARH, Sept 4: Justice Amarjeet Chaudhary, the first puisne judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court retired from service, here today. He remained a judge for the last ten years.

Considered a common man’s judge who believed in quick disposal of cases, Justice Chaudhary was elevated to the Bench in 1988, prior to which he held the distinction of being the only lawyer to be member of the Central Administrative Tribunal for three years from 1985. He also remained the acting Chief justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court for some time. He was also the standing counsel for the Government of India in the high court.

One of the old inhabitants of the City, Justice Chaudhary had his education from the City, first at the Government College here and later took his degree in law from Panjab University. During his early days as a lawyer he specialised in service matters, later as a judge he handled many important cases.

On his retirement, he was accorded a warm send-off by the judges today evening. He was yesterday given another warm send-off by the High Court Bar Association, where the bar president G. C. Dhuriwala presented him a memento and a shawl. The High Court Employees Union also honoured him at a reception today.
