Friday 5 December '08

HARJEET SINGH DERA BASSI, DECember 4 CONTINUING with its anti-encroachment drive in Dera Bassi, the Public Works Department (PWD) on Thursday pulled down 20 illegal structures raised within the restricted area on both sides of Barwala Road. PWD official S K Singla, who was heading the drive, said nearly 29 encroachments were detected in the area, which were in violation of the provisions of the PUDA Act 2004. The detected illegal structures included 20 commercial and nine residential buildings. While the illegal commercial establishments were razed with the help of JCB machines in the daylong drive, the owners of illegal residential structures were given time to voluntarily bring down their encroachments till Sunday. Officers said that if the residents fail to do so, they will pull down the buildings on Monday, for which they will also be charged the cost incurred on the removal process. The drive was carried out under police protection, while the officials of the Forest department also accompanied the PWD enforcement staff . The drive passed off peacefully, officials said. On November 22, the PWD Enforcement department had pulled down 150 illegal structures in the area. The officials said that all encroachments in the area will be removed and the anti-encroachment drive will continue in the coming days.
