Politics not predictable
The conclusion drawn by this editorial from the recent happennings in Karnataka do not seem to be justified in entirety. Several commentators in the national media have been guilty of predicting premature demise of the role for small parties but events have proved otherwise. Both the national parties are loosing with each coming election mainly because between them they offer no major policy alternatives. Both have become too closed to offer opportunities for enterprising regional leaders to join them. Today it is difficult to predict with certainty that fresh elections in Karnataka will benefit only BJP and Congress leaving JD(S) in cold. Afterall the Municipal body elections showed a different trend with big gains for JD(S). If Congress looses 20-30 seats to TDP and AIADMK in coming elections and does not gain from BJP ruled states, third front will be in forefront! and it is not a very improbable outcome.
