The tragic DMRC tragedyBy: Bichu Muttathara | Monday , 13 Jul '09 21:57:10 PM Reply | Forward The tragic DMRC tragedy killing five Metro workers and an engineer and injuring 15 after a launching girder gave way at a construction site near Zamrudpur in south Delhi on 12th July, 2009 is very inopportune and has dented the reputation of the massive and complex Metro Rail project. DMRC Managing Director E Sreedharan, though resigned within hours owning moral responsibility - which was rightly rejected by the Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit - stands to suffer from enormous image problem following the accident. The septuagenarian Metro chief, however, surprisingly recouped some of the lost land with his resignation – which is a very rare gesture today among the public servants in India. The DMRC must endeavour to get the Board of Enquiry Report as soon as possible and must earnestly implement the corrective safety measures in order to obviate repeat of such accidents which might weaken the confidence of the public in such projects of huge dimension and complexity.
Congress governanceBy: S K | Monday , 13 Jul '09 11:01:47 AM Reply | Forward This is result of Congress cum contractor culture. Sonia from Italy is biggest contractor. Manmohan and Sheila are sub contractors. Shreedharan like people are scapegoats.Better resign otherwise remember fate of qualified honest engineers of Bihar. No body will see to your family. come out of this stinking filth.
Delhi MetroBy: Aniruddha Jog | Monday , 13 Jul '09 10:32:36 AM Reply | Forward My dear friends, you don't see the polictics behind this?,All the metro contractors in India including Reliance are try to put a spoke in the Delhi Metro wheels, they want the MD to resign, that is exactly their plans, Mr Shreedaran is a man of integrity and that has made the Metro and Konkan railway a project of stature in the international scene, the Delhi CM knows that there are people with vested interest behind this accident, that's why she has not accepted his resignation, accepting his resignation means the end of the project completion in Delhi and else where for sure forget completion by 2010.Mr. Shreedharan please consider the CM's decision in the right frame and push on the ultimate aim should not be lost, there will alway be people trying to upset a staight man and a honest job, but then millions of common indians support your integrity and drive, don't disappoint them.

Continuos Technical Supervision, a must.By: Harbans Singh | Monday , 13 Jul '09 10:21:55 AM Reply | Forward Some time back there was a report that there is an acute shortage of experienced engineers to supervise construction in Metro projects. It is very unfortunate that continuous supervision of Civil construction projects is taken very lightly in India. It is in the psyche that supervision of civil construction is a low tech work and does not require continuous supervision. This is a complete fallacy and require immediate correction. Casting if concrete structures, prestressing works, launching of girders and and other erection works are extremely sensitive works and require minute to minute supervision of experienced and qualified engineers and cannot be delegated to unqualified construction personnel. Though contractors are contractually responsible they have to be closely supervised both in quality and workmanship aspects.Since this requires high degree of concentration in tough conditions this should be done in 8 hour shifts only. There can be compromise in this aspect.
Need of the hour is not resignationBy: S Ravi | Monday , 13 Jul '09 10:08:33 AM Reply | Forward Let us not inherit the legacy of our old railway minister by resigning. Things are not going to be undone by resignation. DMRC should look into the technology used (may be an obsolete one in DMRC), quality of manpower, ability and quality of the consultant
investigation required.By: Praveen Mannam | Monday , 13 Jul '09 9:57:56 AM Reply | Forward Resignation is not a solution for all this. A deep and throw investigation is required here which should catch the actual culprits for this...like the site in-charge, securities incharge etc. I think now it has become a political drama of resignationrejection and the entire issue is being diverted. Who cares whether Sreedharan resigns or not get everyone under law and prosecute including Sheila Dikshit.
No Room for honest N dedicated peopleBy: RAM | Monday , 13 Jul '09 9:46:25 AM Reply | Forward E Sreedharan Metro icon had strongly opposed the concept of leveraging a land bank to finance the Hyderabad metro project. He had warned that this model would erupt into a full-fledged political scandal. CM subsequently dismissed him. This is the reward for a honest beurocrat who has dedicated his service to the nation even at the age of 77. CM encouraged maytas group and awarded contracts worth 80000 crores. Raju could even change the alignment of metro to go thru the properties owned by him and CM family.
