Hayden repeats ‘India a third world country’

Melbourne, November 20: : Australia opener Matthew Hayden on Thursday stood by his comment about India being a ‘third world country’ but insisted he never meant to disrespect the nation or its citizens and said by 'third world' he meant a large section of the Indian population that are living below the poverty line. Matthew Hayden, you erred someBy: Shashank Vagal | Friday , 21 Nov '08 16:21:40 PM Reply | Forward Criticism is always to be looked at with a discerning sense. While it is true that we need to focus on more important issues rather than being able to play good Cricket (prioritywise, I mean), these two subjects are in no way related the way Hayden puts it! His comments as expected from any Australian on any other issues are COMIC if any. It takes guts (and good upbringing?) even to lose honourably, my dear Hayden! And as for us Indians, let's begin to look decent to the world, it;s about time. Disply of poverty and filth does not appeal to anyone but looks disgusting and more so when even the poor do not care about it, but try more to impose it on the the others. See what is happening in our most cities (!) brought about by those who have nothing to lose?
HaydenLlets give him a smile and say thanks for letting us know!By: vishal | Friday , 21 Nov '08 14:55:56 PM Reply | Forward Lets give hayden a smile and silently let him go! lets not forget one thing,we are also a country of Gandhiji:its high time we start respecting values given by him: let hayden say whatever he says.how does it really matter.we as citizens of this country know what the reality is:and ya if we think that there are problems with our country, don't worry ,i'm sure they will get resolved: you know how: i frankly see an uprising or revolt by economically poor section in few decades time.you can't supress a large section of society with power.and i'm sure this will happen.and that will be the day we would all be equal ,we'd start respecting the value of labour.we'd start valuing human life.our population will be in control.Mr.hayden: go have fun in your country, you wanna have fun in india, you are most welcome:you can great variety of food here which you guys out there cant even think of.we have beautiful places to visit.i'd suggest take retirement and explore india for 5 years and then comment
Hayden is nutsBy: RajGupta | Friday , 21 Nov '08 13:30:48 PM Reply | Forward Hayden should stop touring India - We feel that he is hostile man and not a good guest to have.
third world countryBy: v,raswant | Friday , 21 Nov '08 12:11:36 PM Reply | Forward If the first world is based on stealycutlture, which is indeed is, then india is a third world country and should be proud to be.
Aussies and cricket By: G.N.RAO | Friday , 21 Nov '08 12:01:41 PM Reply | Forward What has " India's Third world' poverty got to do with their playin cricket in this country ? These Aussies ,are besides being ugly on the cricket fields are imbeciles in their talk and behaviour outside. To hell with their lack of sportive spirit, arrogance and colonial mentality !!
Greedy AussiesBy: Vidya | Friday , 21 Nov '08 16:55:46 PM Reply | Forward If Aussies truly believe that India is a 3rd world country, how come they take millions of dollars from IPL / ICL to play here ?
excellent comment !!By: aam adami | Friday , 21 Nov '08 14:55:06 PM Reply | Forward Excellent Comment Rao.
I agree with HaydenBy: Narain | Friday , 21 Nov '08 11:44:52 AM Reply | Forward There is chaos every where and the politicians hold the country to ransom. Corruption is wide spread and nothing seems to have been done by successive government. You should have been residing in Bangalore to know what is happening in the last 7 days. To coronoate Kumaraswamy, the city was halted. There is no power and the roads are not motorable. We are not talking about the wealth of the few, but the worry of a common citizen. There will be ups and down in the US economy (cyclical changes), but in India some have every thing and most have nothing. I am a technologist, but still believe that we have a long way to go to be called as a genuinely caring Nation. BCCI takes the money from common citizens and doles out to cricketers from all over the world. Some earn thousands per run scored. Why can't they help infrastructure development!
NarainBy: karan | Friday , 21 Nov '08 15:59:23 PM Reply | Forward These are problems of a developing country which will take sometime to resolve.
NarainBy: karan | Friday , 21 Nov '08 16:19:21 PM Reply | Forward stop being so disgruntled and defaming India alongwith Hayden and other aussies. What India has , these countries dont have such as heritage, culture, art, history , values, spirituality . Rest will fall in place.Get rid of all corrupt politicians who are the main cause of these issues.
27thBy: derby | Friday , 21 Nov '08 11:40:50 AM Reply | Forward India is not 3rd world country.. it is 27th corld country
Reactions to Haydens commentsBy: Ravi | Friday , 21 Nov '08 11:31:00 AM Reply | Forward I agree to Heydens comment, as i myself am an indian and living abroad for a long time and surely see the aspects clearly. Even though, India has advanced enormously in the recent years, It still has a huge task of reducing the property level. Mr.Hayden meant his remark in view of statistics and here is what the world bank also got to say:"41.6% of Indias population lives below the new international poverty line of $1.25 (PPP) per day. The World Bank further estimates that 33% of the global poor now reside in India. Moreover, India also has 828 million people, or 75.6% of the population living below $2 a day, compared to 72.2% for Sub-Saharan Africa"Mr. Hayden is not discrediting India. He infact has recognised and appreciated other great qualities of a India, rich in clulture. He has only stated facts.
hayden calls india 3rd worldBy: a.j.majumdar | Friday , 21 Nov '08 11:17:09 AM Reply | Forward third world or not, my country is not one where people has right to education, opportunity for jobs, adequate food, minimum health care. condemn hayden, then condemn transparency international, then national sample survey. see if you feel better. i as an inconsequential indian would request my countrymen to be awre how half of us live.
India is a developing countryBy: vrisika | Friday , 21 Nov '08 10:28:58 AM Reply | Forward Wont explain again why i say so. But would like to say that these very aussies who are pointing fingers at us and calling us and India names will find themeselves in a third world situation very soon at the way the economy is moving .Also population growth being zero , things are kept well covered under the carpetin Australai. There is nothing as 1st ,2nd ,3rd or 4th world in this era . This was snobbery displayed by the european countries in the 30's,40's and 50's.Times have changed now. India and China are growing so rapidly, it will be impossible for australia to catch up with them which will soon be in the so called 3rd world situation by then.
reBy: Mr Ramanathan | Friday , 21 Nov '08 12:18:00 PM Reply | Forward vrisika you have the mentality of a flea, why do you insist on being so patriotic is beyond disbelief. Leave Mark alone and leave Australia alone and get on with your own simple little life, for everyone's sake....PLEASE!!
