Hayden slammed for calling India 'Third World country'

New Delhi, November 14:: The BCCI reacted strongly to Matthew Hayden's comment about India being a 'Third World' country, saying such a remark was totally uncalled for from the Australian opener. Back home after the 2-0 series defeat, Hayden spoke about, what he perceived, poor ground conditions and inordinate delays d  ....Read more

India a Superpower?By: C S JACOB | Tuesday , 18 Nov '08 4:33:07 AM Reply | Forward It may be inappropriate for a visitor to call India a Third World country in public; but it is a fact that cannot be disputed. A Chandrayan or a Viswanathan Anand alone cannot elevate the status of the country to that of a developed one. Nor the fact that India has a few world's richest persons amongst them does not alter its status. Look at its position in Human Development Index-126 among the 170 nations in the world. Those who are below us are other South Asian and African countries which are also essentially Third World nations. That India can become a superpower- without providing basic necessities of life viz, clean water, electricity, toilets for all, quality education, healthcare, etc, is just wishful thinking of the elite who have got best out of the present system. A shining India applies to only for a few of its citizens, which also has been dimmed by the global financial crisis. It is time to give attention to providing basic necessities for all instead of pampering a few.
ReBy: amish | Tuesday , 18 Nov '08 10:30:18 AM Reply | Forward who said India is a superpower. But it is definitely a developing country .We are not dependent on UN for supply of food and clean water . Are u a NRI whose pasttime is to pelt stones at India alongwith people like hayden and pther aussies
India is by definition a Third World countryBy: Raymond Fang | Tuesday , 18 Nov '08 2:35:24 AM Reply | Forward Wikipedia designates Australia as a First World country and India as a Third World country (search: First World). By definition, if you go through history, India is a Third-World country- this should not be taken as an insult, but rather as a fact. To its credit, India has developed fast, and is one of the world's fastest growing Third World countries. Most Indians in Australia recognise the difference in the standards of living that will not be eliminated in the next 100 years. If Indians in India can not recognise this, then they are either stubborn, stupid, or oblivious to reality.
Hayden remarksBy: kunal | Tuesday , 18 Nov '08 10:37:53 AM Reply | Forward There was a comment written by an aussie obviously that there would be a civil war in australia and indians to move out from there. Should we inform our defence n your defence about it before hand so that our indian origin brothers and sisters are remain safe there Are u white aussies taking the ownership of australia which is made up of migrants. You should be going back from where your forefathers came from.
?By: Raymond Fang | Wednesday , 19 Nov '08 5:43:17 AM Reply | Forward Kunal... My parents are both immigrant, I don't have any european blood in me. I am just providing some factual information. If you would like to disprove what I have written, I would happily hear your comments based on facts. India is a third world country- fact. I have no idea what the rest of your rambling means... "brothers sisters". Please rephrase that into something sensical.
replyBy: Gurdeep Singh | Thursday , 20 Nov '08 3:46:15 AM Reply | Forward A country itself is so great that anyone in this world cant make fun of it.Sir, if ur statements are hurting the feelings of people in some other country, then the only thing one should do is, apologize. i've been living in Australia for the past 5 years and respect this country and the countrymen. but, i have Indian blood in me. my parents belong to the same country. most of the people in India call it MUM. so u have no rights to make statements about someone's mother. well, as i mentioned earlier that i have been living here for the past 5 years, i don,t think there is something special about Australia that makes Her better than India. For ur kind information, i would like to tell u that India was the country where the first ever civilization was found. when people in Europe were living in caves, we had all the facilities in India. India told you people how to season ur food. As far as infrastructure is concerned, that in Australia is definitely different to the one in India. for instance, the roads, but do you people forget that ur countries are only infants when compared to India. we have all the latest technology in India that u have in your countries. and one more thing, as mentioned the difference in the standards in India and Australia, i would like to tell u something about the same difference. here in Australia, when u go to a hospital, sometimes u have to wait several hours before getting attended by a nurse or a doctor. it has happened to me and has happened to me four times. this changed my thinking so much that i dont go to a doctor anymore irrespective of the fact how sick I am. If the people in India are happy with the way it is, then leave it to them, whether they want to call it a THIRD WORLD or not. thank u very much sir. and one more thing, we have a saying in the oldest language which comes from India that translates something like," the ones that have a big heart, to them, the whole world is like a family."i have a lot more to tell u. i can send you a personal email regarding this, if u want and let u know what India is. no offenses.
Hayden's commentsBy: NIkhil | Tuesday , 18 Nov '08 0:10:13 AM Reply | Forward Some facts.1> India's GDP is much bigger than Australia's.2> Australia cannot even compare to India in terms of defence, science and technology.3>Australians are descendants of criminals4> Australian PM is a descendant of an UNDERWEAR thief.5> Australia's so called development (which is restricted to maintaining clean streets) is also restricted to a few cities not all over Australia.
RebuttalBy: Raymond Fang | Wednesday , 19 Nov '08 5:49:21 AM Reply | Forward Nikhil, yes India's GDP is bigger than Australia- but that's because of the population! Check the GDP/capita and let me know the difference between Australia and India. Russia has a greater military capability than Lichtenstein. Yet, Russia is a Second World country, that doesn't change. Important factors in this debate is quality of life issues- health care, welfare system, life expectancy etc. Utilising insults as part of your argument ("Australian are descendants of criminals") fails to address anything. Crime rate in Australia is amongst the top 10 lowest in the world, whilst India ranked in the bottom 50. There's no point in you raising point 5 in your argument. Much of India is in a pitiful state of development if we wish to discuss "rural" cities, so it's best for your argument if you don't. I am not trying to condone Hayden's remarks. Just make a point that by definition (check Wikipedia), there was nothing factually wrong with what he said- India is a third world country by definition! You need to recognise this and move forward. India has much to be proud of for how far it has come so far, but there is leaps and bounds before it catches up to the western world. I wish it all the best in luck.
reBy: Peter | Tuesday , 18 Nov '08 4:45:59 AM Reply | Forward all indians must go back home to inida or there will be a civil war to get you out of our counrty.
Update your knowledgeBy: Pandey | Monday , 17 Nov '08 23:01:05 PM Reply | Forward INDIA is clearly NOT a THIRD WORLD COUNTRY.Population, corruption, pollution is not what makes a country a Third World nation.GDP(PPP)i.e.purchasing power parity is the general living standard index. With GDP(PPP)of $M 3,092,126 India is ranked 4th in the world.
Update your knowledgeBy: Pandey | Monday , 17 Nov '08 22:50:10 PM Reply | Forward (PPP)i.e.purchasing power parity.With GDP(PPP)of $M 3,092,126 India is ranked 4th in the world.
India not a third worldBy: Shalini | Monday , 17 Nov '08 15:54:56 PM Reply | Forward Where does that leave Africa? Do agree we have problems related roads, water supply, electricity etc especially in the rural regions. Can you compare it to that of Africas. The conditions in developing countries like India and China are not same as Africa.
Inida no longer falls into third world groupBy: Kunal | Monday , 17 Nov '08 15:28:53 PM Reply | Forward I am not sure which era some of you belong to. Times have changed . India has progressed and improved although not completely . Most important factors which pulls down India from being a complete developed country is population explosion and corrupt politicans. But India cannot be called a 3 rd world in anyway It is definitely a developing country. The country which can be called third world in real sense is Africa. What is the difference between some of you and hyden??
India is 3rd worldBy: Scrufs | Monday , 17 Nov '08 12:50:13 PM Reply | Forward Many on this board are proving that India IS a 3rd wld country, demonstrated by the hysteronics being displayed here (let alone normal economic indicators such as infant mortality, PP GDP etc). The overreaction to Haydos’ innocuous statement is telling. I am reminded of the embarrassing mock-indignation displayed following Haydos’ “obnoxious little weed” comment about Bajji – his character was illustrated by his disgraceful behavior when he slapped Sree! admittedly I’m a huge Sree fan ?You guys need to settle down. Hayden mentioned in the same interview that the Aussies had always had an over rate problem, as do others. The 3rd wld comment was suggesting contributing factors as the rate was extra slowI hope India can grow up as a nation the petty nationalism
Agreed Mr. Koptwan but...By: Dr. Yash Kant | Monday , 17 Nov '08 12:23:31 PM Reply | Forward There was debate over whether India is Third World country or not. Obviously India is. But to use this term for a wrong reason or to malign us has problem. Do you understand now?
Reality CheckBy: Koptwan Indernaz | Monday , 17 Nov '08 10:12:41 AM Reply | Forward India IS a Third World country. All the relevant measures show that - income per capita, infant mortality, adult literacy, infrastructure development, etc etc. Denying this is ludicrous. No-one who understands the modern, developed world considers India anything but a Third World country; 75% of Indians live on less than $5 a day! That said, India has a better cricket team than Australia and has fantastic economic potential. But in 2008, India is definitely positioned the Third World.
Reality Check Australia- descendants of convictsBy: Rana | Tuesday , 18 Nov '08 11:03:43 AM Reply | Forward Australia IS a NATION OF CONVICTS. Whatever you say and whatever you do, you will always be known as the descendants of convicts. Each and every one of you including you mister thief who wrote this comment. Try denying it. I'll send you to jail where all your ancestors belonged. How about that. India thrashed you again. That is true. That you are a nation of convicts and will stay so for the rest of eternity is also a universal truth. We all know how shitty you feel being Australian. Poor freaks.
get yourself checked by visiting a doctorBy: Hitesh | Tuesday , 18 Nov '08 0:48:43 AM Reply | Forward I think you need counselling Otherwise i will give you a free ticket to Africa to get a first hand experience of poverty at its worst so you compare the situation to that of India's. Also if i read your comments, you sound like be some NRI who migrated from living in slums to some phoren land and whose pastime hobby is to throw stones at India from a distance.Just becos you managed to have a car and roof over your head in some phoren land doing dirty dishes ot driving some cabs or doing jobs which none else wants to do , doesn't make you less Indian and more of a phirangi. Also Indians living overseas live in a world of pretence that they are like the rest when infact they are being treated like second class citizens. Stop making anti indian comments we know how deep you are in the sand there. You go and get some relaity check by visiting a psychitric.
