Karkare's bullet-proof SUV was hardly used

Mumbai: The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) headquarters in Mumbai got its first bullet-proof vehicle, for the use of its chief Hemant Karkare, in October. Karkare checked it out once, but hardly used it again. On November 26, he and two other officers were shot dead in a regular police vehicle.  ....Read more

validity of quality of bullet proofBy: nagamoney | Saturday , 13 Dec '08 6:46:11 AM Reply | Forward The question, if the bullet proof jackets used by ATS chief is worthwhile to block the onslaught of the terrorists, still not yet answered and the question who ratified the purchase of the substandard thing is put under task so that others will be wary of being caught later on evenif they are retired is not yet made publoic. Unless otherwise the AK 47 and 56 purchased may not fire in time of necessisty. Will some one look into that aspect also?
So called bullet proof.By: Timbaktoo | Saturday , 13 Dec '08 5:09:21 AM Reply | Forward Did anybody try those bulletproof van at the firing range as bullets may seep through it like the so called bulletproof jackets which were provided to ATS.Those involved in jacket buying must be punished. I am filing a PIL for this.
Karakare's SUVBy: Biso | Saturday , 13 Dec '08 17:25:15 PM Reply | Forward It is sad that three key cops lost their lives.Karkare was supposed to operate from a control post and not go about like a Rambo all over the place ,where ever there was news of trouble coming from. The officer was not professionally competent/ trained for an anti terrorist operation. In fact, I feel he also felt like most cops do- " No one dare hit a cop."He forgot he was against real , well motivated and terrorists trained almost to the levels of special forces commandos. He never could fathom their potential to create havoc and damage. They were no rag rag motley crew of underworld ruffians whom he could kill at will. That shows ignorance. We did not expect him to act like some commando, but he could have secured himself to provide the much needed guidance and leadership to his men. Do you realise how demoralising it was for his men to hear about his death while they were struggling. He might have done better as an investigating officer (provided his political bosses permitted him). Anyways, the bitter truth is that ATS was in no position to carry out an organized first line defence / attack against the terrorists.Whatever, the cops did - was more in individual capacities. Not because of any great leadership shown by the leaders of ATS.There are good men out there. Make no mistake. But,their potential was dwarfed by their poor leaders. That is the bottomline of the Karkare story.Let us hope we have learnt the much needed lessons.
do you feel he deserve gallantryBy: banarjee | Monday , 29 Dec '08 18:01:28 PM Reply | Forward pls do a needfull thinking that whether the action of ATS chief deserve gallantry of any sort.remember 100's of jawan sacrifice their life and go permanent disable in this nation and they die as unsung hero and no media cries for them.pls think that gallantry is bestowed for exemplery gallant action and not for dying.
