To South Mumbai:

South Mumbai, you study at Cathedral school, holiday in Cannes, eat kebabs at bade miyans, drink beer pipes at Leopolds and aperitif at the Taj, lecture at Davos, and fail in Hindi exams as a matter of honour. You refer to your part of the city simply as “town”. Your life may be the stuff of ou  ....Read more

What lessons?By: Shiv | Sunday , 7 Dec '08 18:59:15 PM Reply | Forward Well said. It is true that Indian elites have thrived (it is a tautology) in this "pliant" system and bad governance does suits their purpose. And it is also true that Indian elite does not need anything except security at this moment. I am also scared of kind of lessons they are learning but where is the correct lessons. You seem like a person who has the correct ideas and voice. Why can't you write about the "correct lessons"? We have heard all kind of slogan in our schools and from our politician but why there is no commentary on fruitlessness of demanding patriotism, secularism, importance of democracy (have you heard people shouting for military rule?), etc. These are not just great ideas to read about, these are in our individual self interest. I would say for India to exist as a country we (all of us) have to understand what is in our self interest. Our country was founded on great ideals. We need to understand why these great ideals are essential for India to survive.

Good ArticleBy: Harsh Taneja | Friday , 5 Dec '08 12:28:20 PM Reply | Forward Dear Writer, this is indeed a perfect elucidation of the problem that plagues Indian polity and the resons for what meets the eye. If this denizen of 'town' was contributing to a substantial vote, he would have the power to hold politicians responsible and demand accountability. A well written account which should serve as a wake up call. I like your style and the way the article flows
Indians, wake up!By: Mital | Monday , 8 Dec '08 2:02:32 AM Reply | Forward Dear Vinay, Your pointers are really something that makes one think deep. Very beautifully written, very inspiring, and most of all- it is nothing but the TRUTH. It's time we gather our patriotism spirits that we have lost long back,

To South MumbaiBy: Dinesh (USA) | Sunday , 7 Dec '08 18:35:51 PM Reply | Forward I second that. Great article. As an ex-pat having lived only outside India, when I see the life style of South Mumbai, I am just baffled and a little ashamed to see the gap between super rich and super poor. If you haven't, check the Pankaj Mishra's Temptations.. book on this very topic.
ThanksBy: Vinay Sitapati | Friday , 12 Dec '08 15:18:17 PM Reply | Forward Thanks all, for your comments. My piece was not meant to deride the South Mumbai elite. It was to ask them to use their power for the common good. That's all. Point taken about the need to list out the lessons. Could you please email me concrete suggestions at vinay.sitapati@expressindia.com. Thanks
your articleBy: sohini bhave | Thursday , 18 Dec '08 7:07:33 AM Reply | Forward I am a Maths teacher and writing in good language has always been a problem. But as I read your article, I felt as if some one had put my thoughts to words. You must continue to write more soul searching articles like these , perhaps to the news papers in india who fail to stir the right sentiments in people.
