Babuji dheere chalna

Two things over the past two weeks underline for us one of the most chronic ailments of the modern Indian mind: a fear of speed, and of scale. The prime minister talked of a 100-day agenda for his new government and Kapil Sibal was the first off the block. Almost nobody substantively disagrees   ....Read more

Indians desperately crave for change, but they are not ready for changeBy: Pradeep Tumati | Monday , 20 Jul '09 20:00:31 PM Reply | Forward Lets not make this a political discussion. I am focusing on the people here. Take this case: golden quadrateral passes through my state (AP). As said earlier, its 90% complete and a small patch of road work of about approx 50Km near Nellore was about to be completed before NDA lost power. The new govt immediately stopped work on that 50Km patch. Today, it takes more than 2 hrs to cross that 50Km, patch. My concern here is not that congress suspended the work, but why the hell people in that very region are not bringing pressure on the local congress MP/MLAs? Whats wrong here? On one side everyone desperately says that Indian needs good roads and on the other side, the same people don’t encourage/inspire/pressurize politicians to lay roads??? You see, that’s the problem. It’s the people who are at fault… not the politicians. That’s what I have been trying to bring out here.
Speed v/s hasteBy: Yashasvi | Monday , 20 Jul '09 17:29:14 PM Reply | Forward If you had attended your English classes regularly while in school in perhaps 3rd standard, you could perhaps differentiate between the "speed" and the "haste". All "targets" (of showing off to the world while holding some non-descript Commonwealth games) must be met, so what if a few lives are lost. They weren't worth sparing a thought in any case.Let the tradition of bards (or do you prefer Bhat / Chaaran) continue to live. Let Padma awards keep coming....long live sycophants. History does not keep a record of how many peasants died while building pyramids. Posterity only appreciates the Pharos.
Achievements of being in power for 50 years.By: Vaish | Monday , 20 Jul '09 14:39:20 PM Reply | Forward I am surprised at Pradeep Tumati's comments. Here is what Cong has done Liberalisatioin. Nuclearisation. Globalisation. IIMs. IITs. Green Revolution. Computerisation. Telecom Revolution.Employment Guarantee. Space Technology. Right to Information. Amazing growth of 9% for three years successfully. And a thousand other revolutions happend under Congress.Under NDA, the only thing happened was a fem kms of extra roads.
Indians desperately crave for change, but they are not ready to accept change By: Pradeep Tumati | Monday , 20 Jul '09 0:47:13 AM Reply | Forward The problem here is not just with politicians, but it’s the people who elect these politicians. I wondered how people voted for congress in spite of their NULL track record (compared to NDA’s). The golden quadrilateral project was 90% complete within the first two years after start. I don’t think that the rest would be completed within the next 20 yrs. The scary part is, there is no public pressure???? I guess Indians want change, but are not ready to accept change. In my opinion, the golden era of modern India lasted for about 1.5 years… (early 2002 to end of 2003). This was towards the end of Vajyapee’s era. That was the time when India achieved rapid development. We had new roads, new airports, new defense equipment, new diplomatic initiatives, new policies etc. After vajyapee lost the elections, everything came to a stand still and I don’t think things would change anytime sooner. This attitude presents the right opportunity for China to attack India.Ok, now you call me war monger.
New Lesson For Real ProgressBy: Rishibha Gupta | Sunday , 19 Jul '09 13:13:41 PM Reply | Forward Mr. Shekhar Gupta has rightfully understood the 'Babuji Zara Dheere Chalo' syndrome. However, this syndrome is somewhere rooted in our childhood moral lessons. In the growing up years we are taught that the slow
reforms needed in educationBy: dinesh | Saturday , 18 Jul '09 19:37:28 PM Reply | Forward sir, The urgent reforms needed in the education system - is that to ensure that govt school teachers who are very highly paid - actually teach - else they are a burden on the tax payer! Doing away with class X exams can come later - after all teh children learn to read and write. Mr Sibal is putting the cart before the horse.
we delay so that it could give birth to corruptionBy: ashok jha | Saturday , 18 Jul '09 14:38:28 PM Reply | Forward As always SG is only right. we all know delay breeds corruption. so logically going, if there is no delay there will be no corruption and this will put question mark on the very existence of india as a state. hence we maintain our tradition of "delay".we also had somebody who has said "kal kare so aaj kar, aaj kare so ab, pal men parlay hoyga bahuri karega kab" but this being contrary to our "culture of delay" cannot be emulated. we have enough amunitions to discourage upright people from even thinking of serving this country-we instantly brand them CIA agent or an American stooge. we are like this only.
The clock is roundBy: Koustubh Sinkar | Saturday , 18 Jul '09 13:58:22 PM Reply | Forward During a class on leadership and self development we were told that Indians have a circular view of time and Europeans have a linear format and that's why we were told that nothing in India ever finishes on time. Even after all this there are still some people who can see scheming in Shekhar Gupta's article and tell us that patience is the spirit of India. Is there a relation between patience and lethargy? The majority is lethargic and not patient. If we would have been patient, we would never have voted along caste lines and been subject to communal politics. They are always in a hurry , or rather impatient to cause destruction and lethargic to complete construction. Hence they preach patience. Patience from others to tolerate their destruction and not to begin any new construction.
Shekhar Gupta BhajanawaliBy: Gopi | Saturday , 18 Jul '09 12:55:31 PM Reply | Forward Please do not get misled by Mr Gupta's another Sonia-Cong-UPA aplogia in guise of damning our culture. This is now a standard practice of our "Sonia-Manmohan" embedded media (I can not say if out of fear, favor or both). So, when 26/11 happens, they damn the entire political class. When highway projects are delayed (thanks to top leadership), the blame gets laid at the door of babudom / political class / Indians. But, the same one had build the highways in 2000-04 too? Finally, should not the party / family / Babu - who were the ruling clique or policy adviro for long period - be blamed the most for all this ruin? But that honestly will bring Nehru-Gandhis, Congress, Manmohan in the firing line. So, let us spread it and blame the culture or a particular religios group eg Hindu Growth Rate (I wonder, why should not they be prosecuted same way as Varun is being done for offending remarks?)! Shame should be the word for our public discourse/intellectuals, if they any, that is.
commentBy: Subash | Saturday , 18 Jul '09 12:20:32 PM Reply | Forward There is a tax called corruption tax which is invisible and a hidden cost involved in all projects. The bribe givers are primarily more responsible for this because they manage to get shoddy workmanship and under performance rewarded by giving this tax and which ensures future profits and also growth ( but only for the tax payers)
