Responsible doctors need not be worriedBy: Dr. Kunal Saha | Wednesday , 27 May '09 16:47:08 PM Reply | Forward The idea that all doctors should stop practicing medicine only because the SC has awarded Rs. 1 crore compensation to a victim of medical negligence is simply laughable. If this was the case, no doctor would be surviving in USA, where contrary to the claim made in the article, the practice of medicine is still the very best in the world for which ministers and the wealthy from countries like India rush for treatment of any serious illness in the family. The award of Rs. 1 crore is justified not only because it sends a strong signal to the members of the medical community for the first time in India but also because it might deter the reckless practice of medicine by a large fraction of Indian medicos who have remained virtually "untouchable" until now. Despite regular reports of horrific deaths from gross malpractice in hospitals across India, hardly any doctor is ever found guilty for more reason than one. Only the reckless doctors may feel disturbed with the SC verdict.
