Bitter secular-intellectual family feud over Nehru Memorial

New Delhi: For historians, the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library in Delhi has been an institution of unique importance. Many of the most distinguished have been Fellows here, even more put in hours in the library as young researchers. And 57 of them have put their names to a letter asking the Prime Minist  ....Read more

NMML FeudBy: Prof. Karnad | Tuesday , 21 Jul '09 12:56:08 PM Reply | Forward The feud over Nehru Memorial made painful reading. It is disheartening and pathetic to see that an academic Director could not bring out even a single publication in three years. If the publications were sub-standard, what steps did the Director take to bring out a publication of ‘her standard’? Besides, one finds it hard to buy her argument of being unable to hire a good editor for the Journal in the three years when she appointed so many consultants in the Nehru Museum. Where there is a will there is a way !When Prof. Mukherjee took over as the Director of NMML, in an interview to this paper she had said that her priority was to appoint a librarian, the post that had been lying vacant. What has stopped her from fulfilling her commitment even after three years? And, one cannot help wonder why she has appointed a consultant for the library?!

Why are they allowing the Teen Murti library to slip into such a deplorable condition? Why is it that scholars are having to approach the press in order to request the Prime Minister to save it? Is it not the duty of the governing body to ensure that the academic content of the institution is preserved? Has the focus of Teen Murti Library changed from excellence in academics to children’s activities? When did this happen? We always thought it had a library for higher studies.
NMML is fund funneling outlet for dynasty chamchasBy: Rammohan | Monday , 20 Jul '09 1:09:03 AM Reply | Forward Any institution supported by the goverment of India shall have representation from all shades of political spectrum. If congress party want to write the history the way they want it is fine provided the funds shall be collected from the party supporters. Instead of providing employment for lost party leaders by public money like this give them from NREGA. Shameful chamchas are these secular historians
NMMLBy: gaurav | Sunday , 19 Jul '09 8:55:40 AM Reply | Forward This Article seriously tells a sorry tale of deplition of centres of intellectuals excellence. I visited NMML, last year on 14th Nov as i was told of special childrens day celebrations. what a waste it was. you would not see such thing happening in IIC, for they are not supposed to be used like that.Post that out of curiosity, i asked few people there about logic and objectives and i was told that this place runs on whims of fancies of individual i.e. director. No procedures, no protocols, no intellectual debate or consensus. One of the gentleman told me that astonishing comparison, NMML posting akin state governor, given as loyalty bonus,no resposnilbilty,no accountability, added advantge of writing or avoiding history the way you seem fit.I am no intellectual, no reserach guy but can now say That it takes a sreedharan's 80 years of disciplined and honest approch to make a Delhi metro but its takes 2 years of stupidity to reduce an institution like NMML to shambles.Jai Hind
