‘Delhi is the only megacity that has an extraordinary historical past’

Sam Miller, in his own words, is a rare phenomena in Delhi: the 'foreigner on foot.' After studying History in Cambridge and Politics at School of Oriental and African Studies, Miller has worked with the BBC as editor, Current News Affairs, South East Asia. But he has now declared Delhi his hom  ....Read more

God, you people are idiotsBy: Som Manikani | Monday , 26 Oct '09 16:54:52 PM Reply | Forward To begin with, Sam Miller vividly describes Timur's slaughter in his book Adventures in a Megacity - which is not to say he thinks it is the only event in Delhi's history, like you hindutwits. And the monumental centre of Paris was almost entirely built during Haussman's renovation in the 19th century -- its very unlikely that you can name a Parisian monument more than 300 years old.
Open your eyesBy: Brahmin girl | Sunday , 7 Jun '09 15:03:19 PM Reply | Forward Its a brilliant observation by a foreigner who has made India/Delhi his home. I hope that we dont dismiss his observations but have the courage to do something about them. For if there is one city that can carry the international aspirations of India then it is Delhi. As for the slaughtering of Hindus by a crazy emperor in some pre-historic era, so too did Hitler and so too did various other fanatics. Its besides the point. Do we have the courage to change the now and tomorrow - so that if not in one day then lakhs do not die in floods and of poverty.
Delhi is extra-ordinary By: Dr. Paras Deo | Wednesday , 25 Feb '09 16:31:23 PM Reply | Forward We don't need Sam Miller to tell us that Delhi has an extraordinary past. We don't need any ethno-European to remind us about that.......But what bothers me more is the fact that if the pollution and the illegal constructions carry on the present way then Delhi will not have a future By the way Timur did slaughter over 1Lakh Hindus in a day . Does Mr. Miller really know Delhi's past? For me he is just another Ethno-European reporter with his blah-blah and yakity-yak !!!
Delhi-the mistress of political powerBy: Sanjai | Monday , 23 Feb '09 15:56:23 PM Reply | Forward Delhi has always been synonymous with political power. It has been documented that seven cities were built of which a few survivve including Mehrauli, Tughlaqabad, Shahjahanabad, New Delhi etc. its an irony that despite its associations with royal power, the impression it gives is that of corruption, inefficiency and a lack of sensitivity. its a fact that possibly only a foreigner can see romance in Delhi.
100000 Hindus Slaughtered in a dayBy: Jaya | Monday , 23 Feb '09 13:08:11 PM Reply | Forward Please read the history of Timur invasion of Delhi during medeival period. It is a ackowledged fact in History that within 1 day, 100000 Hindus were selectively slaughtered by Muslims. This is the history of Delhi. Unfortunately nobody talks about these facts.
Makes no senseBy: Tarak Mehta | Monday , 23 Feb '09 12:43:09 PM Reply | Forward non-sense. Ever heard of Paris, Berlin, or London? Delhi does have a solid history, but to have a caption like what this article has only shows ingnorance.

Sam Miller's DelhiBy: Mike Vig | Saturday , 21 Feb '09 10:02:42 AM Reply | Forward This is quite a true description of how pedestrians face everyday life in Delhi. Apart from tons of flying dust and debris, traffic threatens to run you down too. As a pedestrian, you have absolutely no right and the motorists will run you down to save their one-minute of driving patience. People struggling to find a serene, quiet and a clean place for a walk are met with pigs and manholes. This is so ridiculous for a country striving to become a big power. We surely forget to fix smaller things in everyday life first. More than just new and more new laws, we need a mindset. But when you have a billion people running each other down and the building and maintenance of cities left to Bhaiyaas, it is not going to change things easy. My sympathies with Sam Miller and may be such interviews will help clean up our minds.
