New Delhi, October 17:: Noting that one-third of the poor people in the world resides in South Asia, a senior UN Millennium Campaign official on Friday said existing poverty is a “shame” on the face of India and efforts should be expedited to erase it. Addressing a function organised by Amnesty International in New De  ....Read more

POVERTY S SHAME ON INDIABy: Syamasundara prasad Turaga | Saturday , 18 Oct '08 7:53:04 AM Reply | Forward Dear Editor, it is true to tell it is shame on our part for not able to eradicate poverty from the bourders of our country. The main reason for this failure is present political system and its unwillingness to do proper job. The leaders irrespective of the political party to which they belong are power mongers and totally selfish in amasing wealth irrespective of means. Means does not matter once you are rich, you can be respected and followed by masses. If this political thinking is in place, any amount of good advise shall definitely fall on deaf years.
Povert in IndiaBy: JKS | Saturday , 18 Oct '08 2:37:20 AM Reply | Forward 1. Poiltical will is needed to remove poverty not slogans. No politician has the guts to stand up and say the things which are good for the people.2. Until or unless the reservation based on caste is not removed, it is very difficult to remove poverty. only few people are getting the benefits of caste based reservation. 3. Then you need a LAW which people respect and know that LAW is equal for every one .4. Equal opportunities to growPut the basics in place rest of the things will follow but you need a will to do so. I have not seen that will in the todays is POLITICIANS to do any good for the people. WEcan all shout slogans and think that slogans will be good enough to remove poverty. Keep living in a dreamland..
we should be ashamedBy: Rejy | Saturday , 18 Oct '08 0:58:12 AM Reply | Forward We are all responsible --we see it everyday and just worry about ourselves and our pleasure things on tv. we see it but be have become blind to it- the politician sees it but he steals from the money meant for them. the rich and well off squeeze them for a bargain -him growing fatter on the other's flesh. The rest we are indifferent because we say we have our own worries to worry about--they live and die in our midst, we shrug and carry on--we pat our selves on the back for all the good things, but what pierces the eye and the mind every single day we do not think about. Friends and fellow Indians it is time to stop pretending and do something. Time to stop fighting and start healing. Time to stop stealing and start giving. Time to be honest and true even if it means having less money. To learn to be happy
Discipline is key to progress.By: Sushil | Saturday , 18 Oct '08 0:51:44 AM Reply | Forward Self discipline and hard work are the only way out of poverty. Poverty is a sin as claimed by Mahatama Gandhi, because it is perpetuated by indiscipline, greed, disregard for others, lust for power and illetracy of mind. All of these sinful characters are lacking in a prime example of animal kingdom- the ants. They do not die of starvation, and are constantly working hard in struggle of life. They are blessed with one trait and that is discipline. We should inculcuate discipline and hard work in every walk of life, and let every man part of the country contribute usefully, not just money. Such contributions can be in the form of- teaching some other to be come literate and know the history and important role models, disease prevention, helping to find cheap loans and or buying better, educating others how to stay healthy by imparting nutrition education, and in the last imparting wisdom to vote responsibly and understand the working of governing machinery.
Nation without a backbone and morality can never have a bright future in the long runBy: jay | Friday , 17 Oct '08 23:51:34 PM Reply | Forward Brain without a heart and morality is as useless as a powerful car without a steering. Indians, in general, are too much greedy and corrupt and do not have any backbone to oppose corruption or sense of justice (in India or abroad). We may be great to mug up information (even mathematics), score great marks and an ideal material for industry (be it IT or BT) but we are absolutely hopeless in building ANY nation or society, even our own. We go to US or EU and exploit what others have build. We will not hesitate to shift to other country if those nations face any problem. No wonder India is now the main supplier of technicians and technical manpower worldwide without having any role model in any field of life, be it academic or applied research, education, sports etc. We are simply a technician grade, copy-cat nation where talents are wasted and rule of mediocrity has been established long ago.
Poverty in IndiaBy: D.A.Eswar | Friday , 17 Oct '08 23:50:39 PM Reply | Forward Overseas Indians working in MiddleEast Doctors Engineers working in US UK and other countries were sending money till 1995. Subsequently IT sector provided job and income activities for Indians, UN or no country helped India in eliminating poverty and they have no right to comment on India. We should strongly oppose this type of people and organisations. We dont want Christian organisations from West to come to India to convert Hindus as Christians to eliiminae poverty
Politicians need the Will and Sincerity to eradicate PovertyBy: Prakash Krishnagiri | Friday , 17 Oct '08 22:44:17 PM Reply | Forward It is tru that Indians have the "best brains and best ideas to lead the poverty alleviation programmes" but we do not have all the best politicians and the Ghulami Government Officials (who always play to the tune of the politicians) to design, implement any such programs. We have been exposing our politicians in Indian Cinema for over 60 years but still they are shameless and dont want to change.
Charity must begin at home!By: Ajay | Friday , 17 Oct '08 20:33:02 PM Reply | Forward It is very difficult to understand why the India Government recently pledged MILLIONS of dollars to the Palestinians when people in India are starving!!!Do they not get enough help from the world community and the oil rich Arab world???
Needed - inclusive growthBy: Rajesh | Friday , 17 Oct '08 20:08:16 PM Reply | Forward Caste based discrimination is the primary reason of poverty in India. High GDP growth and tickle down theory is not reducing poverty. We are living in segregated society. Only solution is inclusive growth.
No, it is notBy: Prakash | Saturday , 18 Oct '08 0:08:40 AM Reply | Forward Caste based discrimination has very little to do with our poverty. It has to do with lack of visionary leaders who create jobs in all sectors. If there is enough growth in areas that do not require adequate skills, it will change this slowly. The poor will remain, unless they get trained to work in specific areas. This is the only way to alleviate the problem.
Inclusive Growth, not in Words but in ActionBy: J.N.Mahanty | Friday , 17 Oct '08 18:17:10 PM Reply | Forward It is unfortunate that although the Govt talks a lot for Inclusive Growth, in reality it practises Exclusive Growth. A case in point is the abject poverty in India's Tribal and backward Districts, where 90% of the people are struggling to have one meal a day. Yet the Govt has not ensured proper development Projects to uplift the health care, water supply, infrastructure, employment opportunities, water harvesting, mechanised agriculture, etc. Even after 60 years of Independence, Kandhamal and adjoining districts of Orissa are yet to have Rail Connectivity, though Indian Railways earn highest profit from Railway Network in Orissa. In one hand people are living in near starvation while on the other hand Govt has increased the salaries of Babus and Bureaucrats by as much as 60 to 70%.So the main mission of a Progressive Govt shd be to Implement (and monitor)Special Development packages for the Tribal Districts and the backward districts with maxm people below Poverty Line.
