Foreign student at TISS alleges gangrape, three of six accused held

Mumbai: A 23-year-old foreign national, pursuing a short-term course in Gender Studies and Development at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), was allegedly gang raped by six students from another institution last Saturday. The victim, said to be an American who lived on campus, complained to   ....Read more

Repressive societyBy: Ash | Friday , 17 Apr '09 15:59:33 PM Reply | Forward This woman should not have expected anything better. Date rape is common in US and the West; what is not common is how 6 males can go out with 1 woman - that can only happen in the SouthAsian/Middle East environment. I see this amongst Indians in US - you see a lot of Indian men but hardly any women out with them. While tha brings in the issue of Indian "values", what chance did this poor woman have - little did she know this was perhaps a preplanned mission to get her drunk and get laid. So much for men at the TISS - well they are like men everywhere else, looking for a chance to get it anyway them can.

To Ms. Nirmala By: Dr. Namita | Friday , 17 Apr '09 8:53:49 AM Reply | Forward Madam, You cannot believe it when a girl accuses 6 men of gang - raping her? What sort of hypocrisy do you want to perpetrate by saying that she should "act like a student"? Do others who behave normally have an increased tendency to be raped? The family is put to shame by the girl crying rape?Or should the family feel mortified that a male member of theirs could violate a woman is such a horrific manner? Please talk sensibly as you and I are not immune to rape either, whether we drink with boys or not!!
It's outrageousBy: Unknown | Friday , 17 Apr '09 4:58:47 AM Reply | Forward Well Ms. Nirmala doesn't mean to say that this is a cooked up story. I agree her wordings are wrong. When she says behaving like a student she means to say ...understanding one's own limits. Come'on are we living in an Utopia. Isn't the girl aware of the crimes going on. Is it not the same mumbai where a mob harassed a girl on new year day. How can some one just go around with some unknown guys in an inebriated condition. I wish the six guys get as worst as possible punishment so that next time a person from a decent family background will think million times to touch a girl. But still that doesnt mean girls will go around with thinly clad dress, booze and hang around with some unknown guys. This incident should be a good lesson to both guys and gals. Another thing I want to hightlight.. The police in mumbai have displayed their irresponsibility when the girl was waiting for their help in hospital. Can't they understand her situation, poor girl was all alone. wonder why she didnt have any female friends !!!To Mr.Savil and Ms.Monika...do respect others and their opinions and just dont throw ur crap. Everyone knows the situation.Ms.Nirmala was warning guys so that these things can even be used as a trap. Once trapped and even if later its proved that it's a farce the loss of dignity is too high and you will never get that back. Just imagine what the family members of the guys would be going through. So understand the nitty gritties of what others are saying and respect others.Period.
Spot the Indian MoralistBy: Valery | Friday , 17 Apr '09 15:31:15 PM Reply | Forward "Isn't the girl aware of the crimes going on."Why should she be? Who should have told her? She does not come from a society in which women hold such a low status and where the woman is blamed even in a case of rape. If she had known, one would think she'd have chosen a different country to study in.Why is it assumed that she did not know these six guys? Maybe they behaved friendly toward her for some time, and she - being from a culture in which male-female platonic friendships are common - would not have known any better than to judge them based on their behaviour. This is certainly a cultural gap, but how dare anyone accuse her of that? Should Indians not treat their guests with respect? Should not all women in India enjoy a better treatment than being judged based on the dress they wear, based on whether they take drinks with men in public or not? What type of society is this which is unable to identify the victim in this case? - - Or maybe the Incredible India ads should showcase to potential tourists the depravity of the Indian male, so that no more foreign women suffer from cultural misunderstandings and get raped in the process AND then blamed on top of it. This is disgusting.
where are the indian values and ethicsBy: Gul | Saturday , 18 Apr '09 0:00:51 AM Reply | Forward I completely agree with Valery, indian men are the sickest creatures in the whole world. Our society is responsible for that. How can one blame the poor girl who comes from a culture where women are treated equally and with respect.I am ashamed of calling myself indian, who goes gaga over culture, morals, values, ethics.Indian men need to clean up their filthy minds.
A rape is a heinous crime, but girls also ought to be more carefulBy: Abhilasha Agrawal | Thursday , 16 Apr '09 18:53:03 PM Reply | Forward Let me first say that my heart goes out to this poor victim and the culprits must be punished severley. But , considering all factors, girls should be more careful in selecting their friends and appreciate that their own behaviour should not convey wrong ideas.Liberty has a tendency to degenerate into license and the latter could have nasty repercussions.

For all the blog writersBy: ravi bhatnagar | Thursday , 16 Apr '09 14:58:01 PM Reply | Forward Dear allWhatever happened happened bad but we can pray to god and do some actions that all this series of things dont happen again. Intellectual Mastrubration is not required here but all need to committ ourself that we will be more cautious. Its a rape or was a quike its not the question the question this can be well ascertained by our Law under our constitution of Democratric Republic of India. Moral policing is bad but TISS Student Union, Women's Study deptt etc. should come together and make a student lead plan to help themself in future.Regards,Ravi BhatnagarAlumini- IIM-Ahmedabad, TISS-Mumbai
ravi bhatnagar By: Suresh ram | Thursday , 16 Apr '09 20:36:16 PM Reply | Forward "Its a rape or was a quike its not the question" So the question should be Why arrest before Trial and Finding? Why arrest simply on the allegations of the women?
!!!By: Shalini | Thursday , 16 Apr '09 13:38:15 PM Reply | Forward To all those blaming the victim! You need your heads examined what kind of hypocritical statement is that?!? Nobody deserves to be raped at all! And if a woman wants to have sex with someone she wouldn't need to label it rape the next day! And when boys cannot draw the line between friendship and lust, willing and unwilling then the spot is on their upbringing!!! What Indian society are you talking about when a woman cannot be safe in the midst of other people be they men or women!! And please going out partying drinking with men or women does not translate to a sign board reading RAPE ME!
To Ms Nirmala By: Pallavi | Thursday , 16 Apr '09 11:52:32 AM Reply | Forward Dear Ms Nirmala I dont know why a student should lie about being raped, esp when a girl knows the implications it might have on her daily existence. Who are u to decide what is the truth. Moreover madam, i think i need to rephrase your sentence ' boys better beware of foreigners' to 'girls(Indian and foreigners) better beware of our Indian boys'. Hats off to your speedy illogical conclusions .
Foreign student at TISS alleges gangrape.By: Nirmala Thakur | Thursday , 16 Apr '09 11:00:49 AM Reply | Forward A student who has come for study to India should have behaved like a student . Once a lady goes drinking out with many boys one doesn't know whether the lady is saying the truth. Boys better beware of Foreigners. They might entice you into deeds for which a case will be built up and the family will be put to shame and resources will be spent to fight the case.
Woman rapedBy: Shalini | Thursday , 16 Apr '09 12:58:26 PM Reply | Forward I really don't understand what 'behaving like a student' means. More than half of the students drink and party. That's not to be blamed. Well the notion that you can do anything with women and get away with it, is what should be rectified.
Foreign student at TISS alleges gangrape.By: Monika | Thursday , 16 Apr '09 12:07:43 PM Reply | Forward This is in response to Nirmala's comment here - here is a girl who has been gangraped by 6 boys in a city which prides itself as a global one, and all you have to say about is that the boys who did this heinous crime should beware?! disgraceful.
are we really blaming the victim here??By: Savil Srivastava | Thursday , 16 Apr '09 11:27:26 AM Reply | Forward Dear Nirmala Thakur, Pls go live in Afghanistan. warm regards,Savil
