Who is he trying to fool? All encounter deaths (including that of Veerappan) occur after the victims have been in police custody for some time. We already have the case of Sohrabuddin, his wife Kausar Bi and his friend Tulsiram Prajapati displayed in front of us in all its gory detail. And it is indeed difficult to believe that the Gujarat police would ever confront a group of armed and well-trained terrorists. We still remember the remarks of the Punjab Police about their "courageous" behaviour in the Jinda encounter at Surat, when they endangered the lives of the Punjab policemen by running away at the first shot. Vyasji, the first job of a spokesman is to keep his credibility intact. And Jaynarayan Vyas does have a lot of credibility. As a government spokesman, you have to lie, it is part of your job, but let us not overstretch the limits.

If you had listened to what Jaynarayan Vyas said after the Tamang report was made public, probably not been so sceptical. Mr. Tamang in his report had said that the encounter victims were innocent people and did not have any terrorist links. Mr. Vyas only said that even the union Home Ministry had confirmed the victims' terror links, which the centre has not denied even in the latest revised report. To a pointed question on whether he(and the Gujarat government) considered that the encounter was genuine, Mr. Vyas had only said that it was being investigated by the High Court and that he cannot comment. This reaction appears more judicious than the statements by the Congress and others who already had passed their verdict that the encounter was fake, without even waiting for the HC decision. Probably, the Central government is trying to influence the HC to give a verdict supporting their propaganda.

The encounter had taken place on the night of 14th July, 2004. On 15 July, some Maharashtra congress leaders went to Ishrat Jehan's house in Thane, Mumbai to assure them of their allegiance to the terrorist's family. They along with other secular leaders issued statements that the encounter was fake and that the victims were not terrorists. The next day, the Maharashtra police, which is not under Modi or the Gujarat government, but controlled by the Cong-NCP government of Maharashtra confirmed that the victims were indeed terrorists. All the Modi-bashers had to eat their words. Thereafter, the Congress has been trying to prove that the info provided by their own IB was wrong in order to corner Modi. And remember, this is the same Home Minister who had declared,"The SIT investigation into the 2002 Gujarat riots would expose the ineptitude of the Gujarat government in containing the riots" even before the SIT had started the investigations.
