Great! Now get to work

Before writing one word of this piece I spent many moments staring at my computers smugly blank screen wondering why the results of this Lok Sabha election make me feel so relieved. I am not a supporter of the Congress Party. I blame it for India being a country in which forty-five per cent of  ....Read more

Better Late....By: Shek | Wednesday , 27 May '09 11:07:44 AM Reply | Forward At Last Madam you have spoken out the truth (better late than never : National security was their pet issue but all they could offer was POTA (Prevention of Terrorism Act), an ineffective law that was mostly misused to target Muslims) It was good to read from a writer of your calibre, whom readers do follow (I wait for your Sunday column) and believe, speak like a true Indian who really care for the country as the Religious Muslims (who had the biggest share in the Independence struggle) do. Though I do not support any party from my heart, I do feel that the Congress who could have brought a major change in their 50-years of rule, has really done nothing great but the people of India has again give them a chance. Let's hope they do look into the problems of the people and we too all come together to make the country a better place to live in. Thanks Tavleen Ma'am.
The way forward !By: Sudhir Gandotra> > > | Tuesday , 19 May '09 20:05:53 PM Reply | Forward Now that the Congress is back to power, lets see how they (mis)manage the economy by countinuing to sell the Nation cheap. While the west talks of Nationalising their rotten banks, this party talks of selling them. Who is deciding the agenda of the Govt. ? Clearly it is the world-bank (USA) and they don't care for the growth of the Nation. Now, with the economy gone, infrastructure not there, no education, no healthcare, no security for the citizens (except for one family), very soon, the rest of the terrible results of their policies (sick!) will become known. The sad part will be that people will have to suffer even more.Is there a Way out ?I think only if common-educated-honest people come together, leaving their immediate aims (education, jobs, business, going to USA etc.) aside for a while, and take charge of the Nation, we can expect a turn towards positive.
a tragedyBy: siddharth | Monday , 18 May '09 18:28:49 PM Reply | Forward A sad day for india..that the UPA can win even ina conspicuous absence of Development is just amazong...anyway, just about 25% of the 50 that voted altogether made this decision...sad
UPABy: Avinash Baranwal | Monday , 18 May '09 17:07:06 PM Reply | Forward Well, let us watch if the congress really improves our lives. Tavleen's first paragraph says the truth but i failed to connect how come she is so sanguine abt the well being of this country having ruled majorily by Congress. Also, if India would have been a servent of china, then India is certainly a servent of US now. Having said all this - i also wish we see good time ahead. May we indians gets jobs which fulfills our life and not extract the last blood of our life.May we appear strong - Internally as well as externally.Economic reforms must take care of common citizen and not only of Industrialists. Loosers are bound to receive flakes...But then fire purifies gold...Let us welcome new time...for all of us...India.
Great! Now get to workBy: S Prakash | Monday , 18 May '09 10:07:02 AM Reply | Forward Just read Tavleen's article. Thanks Tavleen, haven't read a more balanced article in a long time. Most of the educated middle class agree with you on that. Infact Rahul said, 'we owe our victory to the poor'. That explains why the Congress allowed poverty to flourish. Never mind, the defeat of Left
Advani's SinsBy: Ganesh Pai | Monday , 18 May '09 7:39:13 AM Reply | Forward The greatest sins committed by Advani are: 1. Being part of the NDA government even after its abject failure to counter terror. 2. Attacking PM personally. The BJP never tolerated personal attacks on Vajpayee when he was called a mask, then how can they have a different yardstick for the PM. Second, a party which accuses Cong of being soft on Pakistan bent over backwards to be friends of PAK when in power. They failed to teach pak a lesson after Parliament. When Pak army could cross into Kargil, what stopped the NDA from allowing Indian Army into Gilgit and reclaiming POK? The NDA was an abject failure after Parliament attack and Advani was part of the Government during all this in spite of his non-existant proactive policies again terror only on paper. I personally think if NDA was in power during Mumbai riots, Jaswant singh would have agreed to all demands of the terrorists and escorted them safely to pak and gloated over that he had saved a few more lives.
Expectations from CongressBy: HANSRAJ BHAT | Monday , 18 May '09 7:08:55 AM Reply | Forward The voters have exercised their franchise in favour of Congress all over India with the hope that now there will be no more religion or language based politics in India. Each and every decision, policy should be really and solely meant for aam aadmi from crores of Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, Jains, Baudhas and Parsees. There will be no more divisive ‘vote bank’ and politically motivated policies but solely in the national interest as a whole. All are Indians here. There will be no more special favours for unlimited time (or renewed) to any particular caste, creed, language or religion. All should be treated equally, indiscriminately. Congress ought to remember well the patriotically meaningful slogan given by the great former Prime Minister of India, late Sri Lal Bahadur Shastri, “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan,” indicating the permanent and paramount importance of all our security forces, BSF, NSG, police forces, intelligence agencies, fire brigade etc. in the interest of the national security against our untrustworthy neighboring country and Taliban and the other terror groups. Similarly on the other hand the farmers, villages and the agriculture should also be given paramount importance, because they are the backbone of India. Without them India is nothing. Only towns and cities should not be given importance. Mahatma Gandhi knew this basic fact very well and also implemented very well throughout his life. There should not be a temporary show of love and affection for the poor and the villagers only just before polls. It should be forever. There should be instant introduction and implementation of the sternest and deterring laws to control domestic as well as cross border terrorism. And all the rail and road links with Pakistan, PoK and Bangladesh should be cancelled with immediate effect in the interest of the national security. We need not ‘legally import’ the terrorists, arms, ammunition, drugs and fake notes destabilizing our economy. Further, Afzal Guru, Kasab and Abu Salem who had waged war against India should be hanged till their death instantly and set a deterring example before the future anti-India terrorists. Finally, the root cause of all our burning problems like large scale unemployment, acute shortage of water, foodgrains, pulses, vegetables, edible oils, electricity and gas, called population explosion should be controlled like China at the earliest, at least for next five to ten years. And to win the goodwill of the Congress’s crores of Hindu voters the Ayodhya dispute should be solved amicably with the support of the intellectual, sensible and patriot Muslims who are really interested in national integrity and genuine secularism like that of Mahatma Gandhi and his Congress. Now the initiative taken by the former Prime Minister late Mr. Rajiv Gandhi in this direction during his regime should be completed at the earliest so that no political party can take undue advantage of this issue in future.
general electionsBy: tvbkmurthy@yahoo,com | Monday , 18 May '09 5:26:28 AM Reply | Forward The counting is over.the country missed the great fancy of witnessing national horses being put on sale.It has been amply proved that DrManmohan sing is the real king. His policies have been broadly endorsed. He is not a weak prime minister, but a seasoned statesman. His patience with the left, exposed the vulnerability of the left parties. And their numbers have come down. Also the BJP failed to cnvince the electorate about its agenda.Let the congress move forward to bring a glorious tomorrow for India and Indians and secure the country from the TERRORISTS. jaya ho Dr.Manmohan. TVBKMURTHY.
Great ElectionBy: Mohan | Monday , 18 May '09 3:08:12 AM Reply | Forward I had never heard or seen such a great display of democracyas the recent general election.I admire all the different parties and hope the politicians put the differences aside to work for the common good of India. I am a Malaysian of Indian parentage living in Texas.I was in Chennai in April 2009 and its nice to see the different campaigns with the people agreeing to disagree without resorting to violence or blood shed. God bless the Indians and God bless India
YES,Take care of India until next electionBy: venkat | Monday , 18 May '09 2:45:46 AM Reply | Forward This is how democracy works, and so India is stuck with Nehru family corporation to run the country for the next 5 yrs. This is India that had 200 yrs of British rule, why not hand over the country to Nehru family for another 200yrs.BJP should stop playing the blame game, get to work, formulate a coherent, constructive security, economic and growth policies and play a constructive opposition role for the next 5 yrs with new leadership and take country away from the clutches of Nehru family.
