No VHP links, our family condemns Gujarat riots, says Sonal Shah’s brother

NEW DELHI, NOVEMBER 8: Anand Shah, the brother of economist Sonal Shah who has been named by US President-elect Barack Obama as member of his advisory board, said today that his family and their NGO had nothing to do with the Vishwa Hindu Parishad or the Gujarat government. As a “coordinator” of the Vishwa Hindu Pari  ....Read more

In support of Sonal ShahBy: Prem Trivedi | Wednesday , 12 Nov '08 2:59:34 AM Reply | Forward Like Fatima, I also completed a one-year fellowship with Indicorps, founded by Sonal, Anand, and Roopal Shah. Indicorps is a non-political, non-religious organization dedicated to building leaders and to selfless service. I worked in Hyderabad with an organization dedicated to governance reform and citizens activism. I cannot speak highly enough of Sonal Shah and the Indicorps experience. Her character and integrity are an inspiration.
Sonal Shah -- a VHPer?By: ReignForrest | Tuesday , 11 Nov '08 22:51:05 PM Reply | Forward At least from Sonal Shah's statements and those of her brother it appears they have nothing to do with the VHP goons. It would appear her temporary membership in the VHPA (ostensibly to help Gujarat earthquake victims) gave rise to the rumors of her association with the un-secular organization. But labels do matter. At least in retrospect, she should've been wise enough to work on Gujarat earthquake relief in a manner which more unequivocally separated her from the VHP. And now, to ensure she can work unhindered on Obama's team for India's interests, she should interact with the NGOs that are unsure of her allegiance to put to rest any doubts they may have about her personal politics.
Stop the smear campaignBy: Fed up | Tuesday , 11 Nov '08 17:53:20 PM Reply | Forward The family can put it no plainer terms. Sonal Shah could not be clearer. They do not condone violence or communalism. They are not members of the VHP or the RSS. It's about time we stopped this smear campaign. Please don't hold Shah's efforts to help the victims of the Gujarat earthquake against her. (Yes, she co-ordinated fundraising with VHP-A, but that was it. No more involvement, no more membership after that.)
Smear campaign ??By: joe | Thursday , 13 Nov '08 22:34:26 PM Reply | Forward why is it a smea campaign . is she a running for anything ? You bigot is she left or right ??
Endorsing the ShahsBy: Fatima Sadik Alloo | Tuesday , 11 Nov '08 15:08:40 PM Reply | Forward Dear Friends,I am a Muslim-American of Indian origin and just completed a year long fellowship with Indicorps, an organization founded by Sonal, Roopal, and Anand Shah. Through Indicorps, I was working in Bangalore to encourage urban citizens to become more active participants in their local governments. My fellowship entailed encouraging urban citizens of all religions and classes to call for change by enaging with their government (i.e. to better their neighborhoods, improve local infrastructure such as roads, disseminate important legal information to the public, and improve the condition of urban slums). As Indicorps fellows, we were explicitly forbidden to support any form of political ideology. Indicorps message is clear: to live simply and give selflessly to our communities. Sonal Shah and her siblings have done a great service to Indians of ALL religions and classes; they are humanitarians to the truest extent. We should all be more like them.
Who is funding these stories?By: KP | Tuesday , 11 Nov '08 8:44:20 AM Reply | Forward These so called media sources are mere fronts for extremist muslim organisations funded by the same people supporting D-company in Pakistan and Al Qaeda in Afghanistan. People should not be mislead by it.
Proud of ShahBy: Dhruv | Tuesday , 11 Nov '08 5:50:37 AM Reply | Forward This article and the comments are absolutely ridiculous, ignorant and baseless. If we are to judge those by their affiliations, we should paint all Muslims as being terrorists by the same token. Anyone who TRULY knows about this family, and does not just speak for their rear end knows what a great job Anand Shah is doing. This second generation young man all the comforts in America, his family and all friends, and has started an NGO (and lives) in India's villages - something many of you who comment - Indians living in India themselves don't care about. It is VERY difficult for an Indian American to leave all their comforts and do this. He is also a Harvard graduate - meaning he could make a tremendous amount of money but has given this all up... for humanity. So before you make your idiotic comments, get to know the real FACTS.

Celebrate progress don't stomp on it!By: VCA | Tuesday , 11 Nov '08 1:48:30 AM Reply | Forward As a 2nd generation Indian American I am dissapointed by what seems to be the Indian press's need to make something out of nothing with the supposed controversy surrounding the appointment of Sonal Shah to President Elect Obama's transition committee. Based on the facts, Sonal Shah is a true catalyst for change. I think its beyond amazing that she and her family have devoted their lives to service in India. That said, I understand the Indian media has always had a problem with supplying content for their newspapers however I suggest that we all take a moment and bask in the progress our world is making. Lets go back to covering the real issues. Folks who are reading this article, I know it can be exciting and dramatic to learn about important people's connections to radical groups however I do hope you are smart enough to realize that this is just fodder for the media and not an actual issue that should be thought about.
