Our Obama moment

Judging by its rather defensive reaction to British Foreign Secretary David Miliband’s remarks on Jammu and Kashmir, New Delhi appears unprepared to cope with the new approach to India and Pakistan that has been promised by Barack Hussein Obama, who will be sworn in as the 44th president of the  ....Read more

SAF ZoneBy: Suresh | Tuesday , 27 Jan '09 15:31:54 PM Reply | Forward Lets build a SAF zone (South Asian Federation), just like Euro zone, free movement of people and goods. Then it doesnt matter if Kashmir is with India or Pakistan
Our Obama momentBy: Jithesh Panicker | Wednesday , 21 Jan '09 4:51:31 AM Reply | Forward The columnist are going overboard with the mood of the moment. Change will not happen in a few day . This is because of the nature or the DNA of the two nation theory we cannot just wish it away. There is no permanent solution to the Kashmir issue. The only probability is to accept the current LOC as a border other than that other solutions will not be possible . When Benazir came to power Rajiv Gandhi was the PM both were riding popular waves of support but the situation never improved so to expect that some thing incredible is going to happen is like hoping for a miracle .So your expectation that Obama will help resolve or mitigate the Kashmir issue is like seeking a miracle from a soothsayer . Soon after the initial high we will all be left with a terrible Obama hangover. So lets be defensive but also know when we can go on the offense.
US, India, Pak, POK and Kashmir valleyBy: Mark | Tuesday , 20 Jan '09 23:29:05 PM Reply | Forward Good forward looking article. Since election of Obama, different think tanks in US are asking India to help decide future of Pakistan. India is not confident that it can handle the responsibility and the leadership it will need to show. We are nation of cowards. What india should say is that, all along the conflict is painted as struggle of kashmiri people. Kashmiri people need to come together. ok let us take that argument further. Pakistan forcibly occupied parts of kashmir. Hand ove all of the kashmir to India. Let us separate Jummu and Ladakh from kasmir valley and make it an integral state of India just like any other state. Combined kashmir should be given more autonomy but will still be ruled by india. Much like Puerto Rico is to USA. After 40 years, let us have lections on whether people want to stay as they are, become independent state, merge with Pak or merge with india. let the political process begin now.
Obama can't be trustedBy: pm317 | Tuesday , 20 Jan '09 20:16:44 PM Reply | Forward Having watched the US primary campaign and studied in close detail what Obama did to win this election, I would not trust him on anything. He is a wimp and an appeaser, appeasing the left and the right whenever it works for him and right now his focus is to get Pakistan in line with what he wants to do in Afghanistan. Pakistan is using Kashmir as a distraction and Obama is falling into the same trap as did other US administrations. India does well to be cautious. I can understand their slowness in giving this man their trust of whom we don't know anything about, even the US people who voted for him. If he can get Pakistan to stop supporting terrorist organization and their terror activities, then maybe something can be done to resolve Kashmir issue. You don't negotiate with states who use terrorists to air their political grievance.
Our Obama MomentBy: Lokesh | Tuesday , 20 Jan '09 18:37:17 PM Reply | Forward If US wants, 100,000 Indian troops can join US in afghanistan to finish off taliban. IN return, Kashmir dispute can be settled with kashmir remaining with India in its present form.
Our Obama MomentBy: A. Raja Rao | Tuesday , 20 Jan '09 16:17:10 PM Reply | Forward As long as there is no attempt made to appease Pakistan by handing over Kashmir to them it should not matter. But Pakistan should not repeat should not be given Kashmir and thus a success for a policy which is based on anti India which is how the country has survived for all these years since their birth.
Kashmir will not go to PakBy: Kim | Tuesday , 20 Jan '09 18:15:32 PM Reply | Forward If one were to ask any of the indigent Kashmiri peoples, the overwhelming majority if given the choice between staying with India or going with Pakistan would choose India, no question. The biggest and most damaging misconception to come out of all of this is the idea that Kashmiris want to join with the failing Pakistan. Even separatists with a few exceptions would never agree to become part of Pak.
our obama momentBy: krishnamurthy | Tuesday , 20 Jan '09 13:09:37 PM Reply | Forward Obama will go for innovative global solutions in which there will be give and take;we should keep in mind that our country should be safe and economically upward mobile in the near future as our core concern to become strong and be reckoned as a big world power to weild influence on the globe for its betterment. It cannot be forgotten that USA will look into their needs first and a closer contact with them through trade and commerce and other world development activities, will influence their thought process and consequenty any action contemplated by them, there could be adequate consideration for India's prosperity as an ally since we are already the biggest democracy of some repute.
Obama momentBy: oldindian | Tuesday , 20 Jan '09 12:45:24 PM Reply | Forward The pashtun tribesmen waging their insurgency as Al Qaeda of Pak, is totally different from other terrorist organizations. There is no central figurehead and instead what binds them as a unit is such opaque things as tribal loyalty. That is more of social norm and difficult to handle politically. Case in point, the associate of Ahmed (who was assassinated on the eve of Sep 11) - leader so supportive of India - is speaking from opposite camp. What made him to switch that loyalty? It definitely is not ideology or leadership but something deeper. If they are going to be progressively involved in the Kashmir conflict by pakistan, what is the basis of any negotiation with respect to kashmir? Again POK has been created after 60's. So what is basis of including their voice - without reference to Pak Govt? In case of India, there are independent kashmiri leaders. In case of Pakistans, POK reps will be proxies of Pak Govt. So in effect obama's proposal will create Israel like situation
Limited strategic parnershipBy: Sid | Tuesday , 20 Jan '09 12:38:46 PM Reply | Forward cant agree much with the author. we should learn something from world history and think twice or thrice before letting US get involved in core issues pertaining to Kashmir and our foreign policy towards any other nation. Forging ties in such a way that it favors our interest is one thing and to let US get involved in our core policies is completely different or plain disastrous .
Nice ArticleBy: Srinivas | Tuesday , 20 Jan '09 12:37:02 PM Reply | Forward I like the thoughts expressed in this article. New Delhi is only afraid to air its view that the entire Kashmir is an integral part of India... If NDA gets into power, I guess, it will be much stronger in expressing India's stand firmly... Pakistan and the militants are using the term 'freedom' to project themselves as heroes...
