Shed no tears for Tigers

At the peak of the IPKF operations in Sri Lanka in the winter of 1987, when the Indian army was still suffering more casualties than at any time during the war in Kargil, I had a conversation with then-Lt Gen (and later chief of army staff) Bipin Joshi, its director of military operations. “The  ....Read more

Can't agree any moreBy: G.K | Tuesday , 28 Apr '09 7:58:19 AM Reply | Forward Well summed up article on the "ideology" of LTTE, perhaps one of the rarest in English Media. I am reading it from betweens of sycophantic deafening chants of pro-LTTE voices by almost all leaders of Tamil Nadu (even JJ's voice for Eelam at this juncture surprises me, even though she has not supported LTTE even indirectly). Right from the beginning the article had set its agenda clearly and had not swayed away from it. Kudos to the author.
What an article!By: Anupam Gupta | Monday , 27 Apr '09 0:55:23 AM Reply | Forward I don't mean to say that I agree with everything in the article but I must express my amazement with the quality of article. It doesn't tell you something which you already know. It doesn't indulge in Personal view and speculation on the contrary it tells you that somebody is not simply attending invited announcements, have been out there and has a balanced view to its reporting. All of which is not seen nowadays. Well done Mr Gupta. You got it right this time. I salute you.
InAction of the govtBy: Kosal | Sunday , 26 Apr '09 18:20:57 PM Reply | Forward An orbituary to congress would have been a sure shot. If democracy is a govt for the people this is not a peoples govt. This is a govt saving the seat for 10 janpath for its dear ones and all chamchas camped around there. I hope the authors purpose of wriitng is not to get a rajya sabha MP to become a parlimentarian. Inactivism is not a strategy. Take strong action make the SL govt to negotiate for a fruitful solution for the Tamils, then one day kasshmir might be ours or beg to Rajapakse now and do the same to US and every country who throws a whip at you
Bad JournalismBy: Kaushal | Sunday , 26 Apr '09 17:56:16 PM Reply | Forward The only purpose the column seems to serve is SG's rush to write a orbituary to Prabhakar while he is still alive. A nice trip to egosville. I would request the author to focus his thoughts and energies, on the failure of the indian govt to care for the Elam tamil, on Why this is a huge mistake to ignore lives of thousands of poor living there, on Why the govt always seem to fail when it has a chance to boldly act and help the common man
Cult of death and grab for powerBy: Sri | Sunday , 26 Apr '09 16:49:59 PM Reply | Forward It is heartening to see a rational and compassionate view on the Srilankan Tamil issue. None of the so called leaders in Tamil Nadu, who are crying themselves hoarse now, ever called up on the LTTE to find a negotiated political solution. Especially when LTTE was in a better bargaining position they could have with the mediation Norwegian envoy. LTTE is a blood thirsty organisation, run by the lust for power by Prabhakaran, not for the welfare of Tamils. I am a Tamilian and I am anguished by the plight of Tamils in Srilanka, but I have no sympathy for the murderous LTTE.
A TIMLY PUBLISHED COLUMN !!By: OORAN | Sunday , 26 Apr '09 15:59:29 PM Reply | Forward The article reflects the other side of LTTE and their leader. No movement or group can win thru revenging war and extremism. The IPKF might have done mistakes (-though it was exagerated) , but it is very less when compared with what LTTE has done to their own people in past decades. The Tamils must now give up supporting LTTE like organisations and start a new era democratically. THE INDIAN GOVT MUST ENSURE THAT, BY THAT WAY IT WILL REGAIN THIS IMAGE THAT IS SPOILED BY OTHER PRO-LTTE TAMILS IN LANKA AS WELL AS IN TN.
DemocracyBy: Sunda | Sunday , 26 Apr '09 14:50:31 PM Reply | Forward Thank You. Thank for writing the truth about that wretched man. Thank You for writing about a man who gave my state a bad name. Thank you for writing about our spineless CM who once benefited from this wretched man.
Nazi PrabhakaranBy: Kannan | Sunday , 26 Apr '09 11:03:32 AM Reply | Forward Natzi Prabhakaran be damned! Let him taste his own medicine. He stabbed in the back of everybody who dealt with him after asking for support.
LTTE : Macho or otherwise By: vijay | Sunday , 26 Apr '09 10:30:32 AM Reply | Forward i dont agree with Gen Joshi , that LTTE was macho , imagine a band of fighters , who ruthlessly and shrewdly eliminated all opponents ,TELO,EPRLF,PLOTE, their ruthless elimination of political opponents is no less dastardly then crime . theirs was calculated shrewd way of moving ahead in the timeline .LTTE which started as an organstn for rights of Tmils in the end , ended up suppressing the rights they fought for what have innocent people done to deserve this , imagine women and children in the sweltering heat for that one chance to live . LTTE vs IPKF , in that chapter , it was LTTE which gained everything ,they learnt to fight a war and insurgency ,they sharpened their skills , that was what made them go for 20 years Yhen when they had opportunities , they lost them all, cos opprtunity knocked and knocked and LTTE never heard them .If LTTE could be deaf , why should the world be listening to them
The Great Indian IncompetenceBy: Sakthi | Sunday , 26 Apr '09 6:49:23 AM Reply | Forward India created the LTTE. We trained, armed and funded them during the early 80s.We retained leverage on them through the TN politicians. It is because of Rajiv's naivety we got involved directly in lanka through IPKF and we lost face, lost control and lost leverage. And the killing of Rajiv further alienated our influence on the real Tamil national question in Lanka. To be honest,at the killing of Rajiv we should have invaded the Island,as killer being the Srilankan national irrespective of her language, throwing all the Singhala politicians out of their job, made another Bhutan kind of set up at the south of India with Srilanka's foreign and military powers in our hands. And giving a just solution to the Tamil national question, dividing Lanka into two states on the basis of language a Singhala Pradesh and a Eela Nadu. Even now, we can do that along with the help of US and other western powers. Its high time India asserts its power in its neighborhood.
