When they come again

It will happen again. And soon. Probably in another Indian city. The objectives of the terrorists are clear. One, weaken India’s economy which has been robust in the recent past, giving hope that poverty can and will be eliminated in our lifetimes. Two, weaken India’s links with the external wo  ....Read more

questionsBy: Avinash Mulye | Tuesday , 9 Dec '08 8:15:28 AM Reply | Forward Somehow I do not think that the terrorists are so strategic and so brilliant. They know that they need to hit the economic nerves of India but anything more than that ... I do not think they are so brilliant stratgists. Your article sounds like - the terrorists hired a strategy expert to design their approaches and strategies.
India is neither a democracy nor a secular oneBy: Dr.G.Srinivasan | Thursday , 11 Dec '08 17:14:11 PM Reply | Forward But do we have a secular democracy.I think when the PM is nominated and stays for a whole term without contesting an election the word democracy loses its meaning .No democracy can have an unelected person heading a democracy. We are not secular either .I think even in dictatorships and the most oppressive regimes people do express their opinions fearlessly -- it all has something to do with the inner sense of fearlessness. We had a constitution imposed on us.Our politicians do not think people should be part of decision making process-- except in elections .Sixty and odd years at no point did they approach people with important problems -- not that there were not any. There were no referendums.Politicians betrayed us by impsoing a democracy on us -- it turned out to be FEUDALISM
Your article on terrorist attack in MumbaiBy: wooded lot | Tuesday , 9 Dec '08 7:34:07 AM Reply | Forward Sir, You are eminently qualified to take over as the next Security Czar for India!
Reforms!By: savi | Tuesday , 2 Dec '08 4:41:15 AM Reply | Forward I agree with what the article says. We need a sea change in India and the whole system needs to be changed along with all ministers not to contest elections for more than two terms, and all candidates have to contest elections from different places each time so that only that constituency is not benefitted every time.(Ex:Amethi) Also the parlimentary seats should NOT be hereditary. Make the politicians work for the citizens. They are our representatives, aren't they? Why are we letting them go so easy? There is a Gowda, a Sonia, and so many others that come to mind, that have to be banned from politics. We need army leaders who know how to deal with attacks to be made defence ministers and home ministers. We need people like Mr.Kalam who are the pride of the country as opposed to the Thackerays and Sonias who are both not good for India. We need professionals to deal with international crowd, not some goon who has not idea about anything.
Mumbai Terror AttacksBy: Jacob Varughese | Tuesday , 2 Dec '08 3:19:12 AM Reply | Forward Jaithirth,Very good, excellent analysis. The mindless terroists were trying to kill as many birds as possible with their shots. The surge of India in various fields and dimmensions would raise the eyebrows of many and definetely create jealousy among enemies. This henious act of crime is a challenge against humanity in whole. This has exposed the poor state of affairs of many vital orgns of the systems.
very well writtenBy: Sam | Tuesday , 2 Dec '08 0:53:27 AM Reply | Forward Well said Mr. I hopelessly hope that people rise above the divisive mindset and show some common sense. And just as hopelessly I hope our government shows some spine and forethought in dealing with such situations.

Mumbai blasts the destruction and the rubbleBy: Prasad GS | Monday , 1 Dec '08 19:16:42 PM Reply | Forward Jerry Rao is right in many ways. Among the rubble of destruction we also are able to see the government, administration, burocracy and below all, the politicians. These are all dead long time ago and nothing can revive them. Standing tall in this rubble are the heroes of NSG, Marcos, Army and the police given the delay in bringing them to action. Early on in the whole crisis a clear direction and strategy were conspicuous by their absence. Else we would not have lost these heroes like Hemant Karkare. One other agency showed it is in coma is the visual medium making a mockery of the crisis and the live telecast. They had not idea of what to do either. Without exception, every channel stopped short of what SubbuIyer said.. 'replay is sponsered by'. I appreciate the commitment of staff staying all the 59hrs without a break. Media can treat this as practise and keep mum next time with a still video camera. The viewers have better sense of the gravity and understand.
muslims are not any time down gradedBy: MITHUN SUKUMARAN | Monday , 1 Dec '08 18:11:18 PM Reply | Forward it was a very nice message by the the author. i really thank the personal in giving out his feelings which is present in all indains. muslimism is the target thing taken forward by the terrorists, and we all know very well that muslims staying india enjoy all sorts of freedom what any hindu christian, budhist or any other religion faces. sompe places got diruptions, mostly created by the politicians to make chaos for their political interest. come on dear muslim friends, this is our country and we need peace. u r never discriminated by anyone of us. i do believe in god, which we call alla, jesus, krishna budha and so on...... religion is the feeling of each personal and its not to be obstructed by anybody. let the security enforcement systems in the country take care of the welfare of all the religions equally. the law and order its same to all, then were we are wrong, try to understand before falling into the dirty bloody inspirational talks done by any religious millitants..........

Political reformsBy: raju | Monday , 1 Dec '08 15:56:54 PM Reply | Forward The politicians, ministers and all MPs should be answereable to Citizens committees. Form many such Citizens committee and bring all of them to answer in camera every 3 months. They must define their goals and objective in their respective fields or constituencies and must present every three months what they have achieved to the committee. The comittee should consist of eminent people, say 6 persons in each, from professional fields representing cross section of society. Even PM should not be spared. We need POLITICAL REFORMS. Onlly qualified and eminent and honest people should be allowed to contest. There should be age bar. Stop this mockery of elections and restrict to max 3 parties at national level. Both Lok saba and assembly elections in all 29 states should be held simultaneously. Criminals in politics should be hamged. Corruption should be severely dealt with. Bureaucrats, if found delaying things of national importance should be hauled up or put behind bars.
