Wooing the young

New Delhi: Until now, political parties generally ignored the young and first-time voter. In the upcoming Parliamentary elections, the focus is on garnering the youth vote. The young want someone who can offer a future, which is quite a different matter. Age is incidental, neither an asset nor a liability. Ability, backed up by a successful track record, is essential. The gen next and electionsBy: G.Dwarakanath | Tuesday , 17 Mar '09 12:43:12 PM Reply | Forward I have often listened with disblief the heated discussions college going children have on the current politics of the country. They uniformly hate corruption and selfishness among politicians. They think poorly of the Congress and though they have some reservations about particular persons they generally think well of the BJP. Narendra Modi, Sivraj Singh Chauhan and even Raman Singh. though a little older, are these children's favourites. Very few of this gen next think well of Mayawati, Lalu Prasad or Jayalalitha. But how do these small parties get votes? That is a different story. The trump card of the BJP is that it is the only party that is really concerned about The country and its culture. If only the BJP can build upon the reservoir of goodwill it enjoys it may perhaps come to power and force even the Congress to reform itself and go back to its old glory of a party of selfless people. The rag tag small parties will all vanish.
