Manjrekar, Gavaskar dazzle
PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
Sanjay Manjrekar plays a defensive shot against Australia's Brendon Julian in the World Select XI versus Australia match in Hong Kong. Manjrekar scored 80.
HONG KONG, May 11: Mark Waugh's scintillating 116 off 66 balls today powered
Australia to a four-wicket win over Rest of the World XI for whom Rohan
Gavaskar made a unbeaten 51 off 30 balls to share the limelight.
Skipper Sanjay Manjrekar topscored for the World XI with 80 runs from 86
balls, but it was the quick-fire knock of Sunil Gavaskar's son which took
the team to 245 for eight in the allotted 40 overs.
Rohan hit four sixes to earn warm applause from a substantial crowd at the
Kowloon Cricket ground here.
Pakistan's Aamer Malik (36) and South Africa's Lance Klusner (30) made other
useful contributions to the World XI, which also included Lanka's Asanka
Gurusinha.
In response, the Australians, who stopped over here for a day on the way to
England for the Ashes series, batted brilliantly to score an easy win,
notching up 248 for six in only 28.4 overs.
Besides Mark Waugh, his twin-brother Steve made 45 (28 balls) and Ricky
Ponting 35 (31 balls), but skipper Mark Taylor's poor run with the bat
continued as he failed to cross the double-digit once more.
Gavaskar took two wickets for 43 runs.
