Star studded gala marks Cannes fete
CANNES: The Cannes Festival marks its 50th anniversary today with a
star-studded gala at which Wim Wenders unveils his thriller The End Of
Violence, the latest in this year's competition diet of brooding films.
French President Jacques Chirac, assuming a high profile during a tightly
contested parliamentary election campaign, showed up in Cannes for lunch
with members of the festival jury and a chance to mug for the cameras with
big film stars.
Bofors case
NEW DELHI: The CBI would seek sanction to prosecute several public servants
in the Rs 64-crore Bofors pay-off case next week when it presents its report
to the government on the investigations conducted so far, official sources
said here today. The report would form the basis of charge-sheets against
these officials which would be filed once the government grants the
permission to prosecute them, they said.
Naxals attack
HYDERABAD: In the continued violence targeting ruling Telugu Desam Leaders,
naxalites of the outlawed People's War Group blasted the house of a TDP
leader at Anantaram village early today. According to police here, PWG
extremists belonging to Ravinder Dalam attacked the house of K Venkanna,
mandal president of Telugu Rythu and blasted it with detonators.
Blast in Delhi
NEW DELHI: A minor girl died and another was injured in an explosion caused
by chemicals at a house in West Delhi on Sunday, police said. The mishap
occurred when chemicals stored in a house in Nangloi locality exploded
around mid day, they said. Police said Gudia, 12, died in the hospital and
Lovely aged five was struggling for her life in the hospital.
