Choksi shocks Prakash

SANGLI, May 12: Teenager Manthan Choksi of Gujarat (2) scored an upset win over second seed GB Prakash (1) of Tamil Nadu in the second round of traditional SK Valdya Memorial International Rating chess tournament in progress at Sangli today.Top seeded international Master P Konguvel (2) of ONGC Chennai scored an emphatic win over his city-mate TV Subramanian (1).

Manthan was lucky to upset Prakash in 48 moves of French defence today. In a clearly superior position, Prakash blundered into a lost position and as soon as he realised that he was helpless to stop Manthan's pawns from queening, he surrendered immediately. Konguvel was in nis element against Subramaian's Sicilian Defence. The top seed penetrated the black position with his army of pawns. Subramanian resigned on 39th move.International Master Ravi Hegde's (2) enterprising pawn gambit trapped NR Raghuraman's King in the centre. Thereafter Ravi's active pieces forced a checkmate in 37 moves King's Indian Defence. N Sudhakar Babu (2) accounted for Wajid Ali Khan (1) of UP in 32 moves of Sicllian Defence.
