Mumbai notes -- DD, AIR staff to protest


A truck hang precariously on the edge of Vashi bridge after its driver lost control and drove through the rallings on Tuesday.

Disappointed by the Fifth Pay Commission recommendations, the technical staff of Doordarshan and All India Radio will go on a countrywide agitation from May 15.

The employees are protesting the reduction in their expected pay scales. The fifth Pay Commission has reduced the pay scales of most of the cadres like helpers, technicians, senior technicians, engineering assistant, senior engineering assistant and assistant engineer.

Cleanliness drive

Khar Residents' Association launched a cleanliness drive on May 10. City mayor Vishakha Raut and sheriff Usha Kiron appealed to the citizens to dump the garbage in containers. Additional municipal commissioner Ratnakar Gaikwad was also present on the occasion.

New programme

Channel [V] will launch a new programme called `Toofan TV', based on the Indian cult movies. It will explore the various genres like Indianised Western movies and uniquely Indian films. The show will be launched on May 15.

Felicitation

Bishop of Mangalore Aloysius Paul D'Souza will be felicitated on the grounds of Mary Immaculate Conception High School, Borivli on May 17. The Archbishop of Mumbai Ivan Dias will be the chief guest.

Diamond jubilee

Dr Ambedkar Institute of Social and Economic Change has organised the diamond jubilee celebration of `Annihilation of Caste', Ambedkar's writings on caste system in India. The programme will be held on May 15 at Yashwantrao Chavan Centre. While deputy chairman of the Planning Commission will preside, the main speakers will be Dadasaheb Rupawate, professor Ram Bapat, Raosaheb Kasbe and Dr A H Salunke.

Express stop

Rajkot-Bhopal Express has been provided a stop at Mahemadabad and Kheda Road stations for six months on an experimental basis.

Holiday special

With a view to cope with the summer crowd, the Ahemdabad-Nizamuddin-Ahemdabad tri-weekly holiday special, will be extended upto May 15, according to a Western Railway press note.

Dhondy dead

Jerbanoo Shavaksha Dhondy, 82, proprietor of Jame-Jamshed, a Parsi weekly, died of old age on Tuesday, family sources said. She is survived by a son, Russi Dhondy, editor of the weekly, and three daughters.
