Statescape -- Basu to edit epic volume on communism


CALCUTTA: The CPI(M) will bring out a full-fledged 25-part volume on the Communist movements in India, with the veteran Jyoti Basu asked to head an editorial board in this regard. The first volume is expected to be published in August. This is claimed to be the first-ever effort to publish an authentic documents on the Communist movements. The volume is expected to cost around Rs 25,000.

Defence shells kill three in Orissa

BALASORE: Three persons of a single family were killed when one of four shells they had retrieved from the sea beach near the interim test range at Chandipur, about 15 km from here, exploded on Wednesday night, the police said. The shells were part of a bigger warhead under test by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for the last two days.

More teeth for Environment Act

BARODA: The Gujarat government has demanded an amendment in the Environment Act with a view to book errant industrial units responsible for environmental pollution in the state. Government officials made this demand before the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Environment, which is on a three day visit to the state.

Train rams jeep at crossing; 2 killed

BOLANGIR: Two occupants of a jeep died on the spot when the 17-down Link Express train ran dashed against a jeep at Punjibata-Ambali unmanned level crossing between Harisankar Road and Khariar Road stations on Tuesday.

International seminar on RoerichNEW DELHI: An international seminar will be organised at New Delhi in December as a mark of respect to late Nicholas Roerich on the occasion of his 50th death anniversary. This decision was taken at a meeting of the International Roerich Memorial Trust here on Thursday.

Saach Pass open for trekkers

CHAMBA: The 4650 mt high Saach Pass, separating the Pangi Valley from Chamba had been reopened for pedestrians and trekkers. The route from Chamba to the land-locked Pangi Valley was one of the most popular trekking route which found place in the itinerary of foreign and domestic tourists and trekkers.The pass normally remained closed from October to May every year.

AP to complete World Bank projects

HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh Major Irrigation Minister T Nageswara Rao on Thursday said Srisailam Right Bank Canal and Sriramsagar projects in the state would be completed by 2002 AD, as per the guidelines of the World Bank. He told reporters here the World Bank was providing Rs 1,300 crore assistance to the two projects, while the state government would provide Rs 554 crore as its share to the projects.

Official policy on transfers sought

NEW DELHI: All India Services Associations of Gujarat have welcomed the Allahabad High Court verdict directing the Uttar Pradesh Government to lay down ``sound principles'' governing personnel policies, cadre management and placement policies. In a letter to Cabinet Secretary T S R Subramanian, IAS Association (Gujarat Branch) has suggested that the Centre should constitute a committee of very senior officers to determine the placement policy. In a judgement, the HC had stated that transfers and postings were covered by political, caste, monetory and other considerations and they should be ordinarily be left to the senior civil servant.
