Dortmund stun Juventus to lift European Cup

Reuter

MUNICH, May 28: Borussia Dortmund caused the biggest upset in the European Cup final for more than a decade when they beat hot favourites and holders Juventus 3-1 at the Olympic Stadium today.

Two goals in the 29th and 34th minutes by Karlheinz Reidle and a third in the 71st minute from substitute Lars Ricken, who had been on the pitch for only 16 seconds, sealed Juve's fate.

Their solitary goal came from substitute Alessandro Del Piero after 64 minutes.

Dortmund took the lead with their first shot of the match after 29 minutes when Riedle lashed home a left-foot drive after chesting the ball down. He made it 2-0 when he rose unmarked to head home a corner five minutes later. Ricken scored a superb goal, lofting the ball high over Peruzzi's head from 30 metres after spotting the goalkeeper off his line. Del Piero's goal was a close-range flick to end a move engineered by Juventus' Croatian striker Alen Boksic.

The result was the biggest upset since Steaua Bucharest beat Barcelona in the 1986 final.

Borussia became the first German team to win the Cup since Hamburg in 1983, who coincidentally also beat Juventus in that final. Dortmund's triumph completed a double for German clubs this season after Schalke's Uefa success.
