Statescape -- 11 gang members arrested, weapons seized


CHENNAI: Eleven members belonging to two factions of a criminal gang, most of them from north Chennai, were arrested late Wednesday night and country bombs and weapons seized from them, the city police commissioner, V K Rajagopalan, said on Thursday. He told reporters that the police seized four country bombs, 32 `quarter' bottles containing incendiary materials, including, petrol and acid and 16 swords, many of them rusted and a couple of knives.

Dyeing unit explosion toll rises

COIMBATORE: With two more persons succumbing to injuries, the death toll in Wednesday's boiler explosion at a dyeing unit in Kuppandampalayam near Tirupur has risen to seven, according to police sources here. Five persons, including a woman and a one-year-old child, were killed and five others received serious injuries in the explosion on Wednesday. Of the five injured, one person died late last night in Tirupur government hospital and another succumbed early Thursday morning.

Rs 90 cr relief for quake victims

BHOPAL: A sum of Rs 90.50 crore was distributed till june 30 as relief to those affected by the May 22 earthquake that hit Jabalpur district. Of this, Rs 42.97 crore was given to 1,43,253 people in rural areas and Rs 53.84 crore to urban areas for repairing damaged houses. The amount distributed till now includes Rs 38 lakh given to the kith and kin of those who had lost their lives in the quake. The district administration has erected 112 more temporary shelters in the villages.
