Kalyan Diary -- SSC toppers

Nishikant Budhkar & Yogesh PawarMUMBAI, July 3: Its time for the success lists of the year again. And what could be more a matter of pride than the fact that 13 SSC students from Kalyan and Dombivili have made it to the merit list.

While Kirti Talole from Dombivli stood first in the Thane district (91.86%), Sanket Sangaokar has the distinction of having topped it in Kalyan (90.80%). Well done guys.

Viva Vani

For the Vani Vidyalaya there is more cause for celebration. In its golden jubilee year the school has three of its students (Ganesh Iyer, Amit Khandekar and Parag Misar) in the merit list. Infact Parag ranked first in the whole state among SC/ST students. From a small 12" x 10" room in 1947 the school has indeed come a long way.

Sena versus BJP

The felicitation of all the toppers in both Kalyan and Dombivli made for a rather funny competition between the Sena and the BJP as they vyed with each other over it on June 28. While MP Ram Kapse did the honours for BJP, for the Sena this was done by the KDMC mayor Ramesh Dalwi. In fact there were times when both the parties would run into each other in the small cubicle flats and this would create quite a flurry of activity.

Green Mayor

Mayor Dalwi who had been interviewed by a TV crew earlier had obviously not had time to change as he made his way to the various homes sweating profusely in a gaudy green (yes green not saffron) suit with a matching tie to boot. Though his retinue was larger than Kapse's more than made up for that with his winning simplicity. Of course the personal rapport he enjoys in the community held him in good stead as he went around asking whether, ``Chimni was married? How is Bhagu attya? Tell her I met her nephew in Pune.'' Now we know how Kapse has made a success of his career.

KTPS president

At the annual general meeting of the Kalyan Taluka Patrakar Sangh (KTPS) held on 28th June, Tushar Raje (Saamna) was elected president for the year 1997-98. The decison to merge the Kalyan Dombivli Patrakar Sangh with the Kalyan Taluka Patrakar Sangh was also announced. Raje thanked members for giving him an opportunity to work, and assured them that he would try to get an affiliation with the Mumbai Marathi Patrakar Sangh. He would also try to get quota benefits for its members.

Anniversary

Anuraag, a theatre organisation, celebrated its 24th anniversary at Sarvajanik Vachanalaya Kalyan. The chairperson of the organisation Meghan Gupta announced that children would be trained for Rangabhoomi. The Ashok Mandale, chairperson of the cultural committee of the Kalyan-Dombivali Municipal Corporation assured the audience that he would extend maximum possible help for the development of theatre in Kalyan.
