One killed, dozens injured in Hebron riots

HEBRON, WEST BANK, July 3: In the firebomb-scorched alleys of Hebron and the sand dunes of Gaza, Israeli troops fired live rounds and rubber bullets on Wednesday to quell Palestinian riots. One protester was killed and dozens were wounded.

Palestinian police did nothing to calm tempers inflamed by an anti-Muslim leaflet in Hebron and a land dispute with Jewish settlers in the Gaza strip.Yasser Arafat's West Bank security chief, Jibril Rajoub, warned the violence would only get worse unless Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu implements the peace agreements the two sides have signed.

``We are not in charge of guarding Netanyahu's policies against the Palestinian people,'' Rajoub said contradicting Netanyahu's claims that Israel and the Palestinians have resumed security cooperation.

Rajoub took US Consul General Edward Abington on a tour of the Hebron clashes, where they watched dozens of Palestinians hurl rocks and firebombs at Israeli soldiers. Israeli snipers, perched on rooftops, responded with live rounds, fired at the rioters' legs.

It was the first time in weeks that Israeli soldiers used live ammunition in Hebron. Standing just feet away, Abington said: ``The situation is very tense. We need restraint on both sides.'' Israel's defense ministry sent a message to Palestinian and US officials warning that Israel would be forced to react harshly if riots continued in Hebron, an Israeli official said.Meanwhile in Cairo, Arafat, who had talks with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and complained that Israel was purposefully hampering the West Asia peace process.re¬Ut›8?¼Tt›small-town, religious upbringing and sense of responsibility: he was conservative politically, married only once, earned medals for his World War II missions and often returned to help out at the family hardware store in Indiana, Pennsylvania, where his best actor Oscar was displayed in the window for 20 years. With a stammering, humble manner, Stewart's acting seemed effortless and natural. Frank Capra, who directed Mr Smith and It's a wonderful life, once said that even better than a great performance was ``when the actor disappears and a real live person appears on the screen.'' Stewart was one of the few to reach that level, Capra has said of the man. Stewart made his feature film debut in 1935's The murder man as a newspaper reporter opposite Spencer Tracy. ``I was all hands and feet, and didn't know what to do with either,'' he once said.In 1980, he received the American Film Institute's life achievement award, and in 1985, an honorary Oscar.ist¬Ut›X;¬Ut›uarters, the area seems to have fallen into a time-warp.
