Rly employees' stir today

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE

July 9: Mumbaiites may have to face yet another agitation by railway employees who have decided to protest against what they call "complacency" on the part of the Union Government to decide on the changes which have to be made in the proposed recommendations of the Central Fifth Pay Commission so as to benefit the employees.

Nearly 1,000 Western Railway employees have decided to agitate outside the Divisional Railway Manager's office at Mumbai Central at 1 pm today.According to S V Hardikar, Chairman of the Western Railway Employees Union (WREU), there will be dharna and morchas to protest against the government's stand on not paying heed to certain anomalies in the recommendations of the report.

Hardikar added that if the recommendations are accepted as they are proposed, the net take-home salaries of employees will be lesser than what they are drawing now.

``We want to have those changes made in the report in the interest of the employees,'' he stated and added that the agitations will be only limited to the Mumbai division while a similar agitation will be launched by the motormen separately on July 14, he further stated.
