Mumbai Notes -- Route change by BEST

MUMBAI, August 1: In a press release, BEST has announced a change in the route of bus number 111. The bus will operate between PK Kurne Chowk and CGS Dispensary instead of the original route between Prabodhankar Thakre Udyan and Ambika Mills Bus Station. The route will be operated via Kurne Chowk, Pandurang Budhkar Chowk, TV centre, Dr A Besant Marg, Worlikar Chowk, Siddhivinayak Temple, Hanuman Temple, Tilak Bridge, Wadala fly-over and Ravji Ganatra Marg.

NCPA fete

The National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA) has decided to celebrate the golden jubilee of Indian Independence by organising a series of programmes. Titled Radha Katha, the programme will be spread over four days starting from August 14, a spokesperson of NCPA said.

Radha Katha will have some of the living legends come together for the first time in India - Pandit Ravi Shankar, Zakir Husain, Gana Saraswati, Kishori Amonkar, Pandit Hariparasd Chaurasia, Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, Pt Birju Maharaj and Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra.

Azaadi on CD

The hype generated by the golden jubilee of India's independence has turned hi-tech with the release of a CD-Rom, `Azaadi - Making of the nation.' According to a press release, the CD-Rom relates to the saga of freedom which began with the great uprising of 1857, culminating with the unfurling of free India's flag at Red Fort on August 15, 1947. It is not merely a documentation of a few facts glorifying martyrs, but an attempt to tell the story of a nation which fought the mightiest empire on earth.

Azaadi, released by UVC Pvt Ltd is an edutainment experience targetted for the younger generation to create awareness of hardships faced by freedom fighters in their struggle to free India from foreign oppression.

Free medicare

Helpage India, a non-profit voluntary organisation, plans to start a mobile medicare van to provide free facilities to people living in low-income areas of Mumbai and Thane districts. The project is being funded by a Rs 10.8 lakh donation made by Dow Chemical International Ltd. The unit will be equipped and manned by doctors, pharmacists and social workers.The organisation also plans to set up similar units at Pune and Nagpur in the state.

`Torch' rally

Mallasajan Vyayam Shala, Bellary is holding a rally named `Torch Run' from Mumbai to Bellary, a distance of 900 km to commemorate 50 years of Indian Independence. The rally will start from August Kranti Maidan on August 7 and wind its way through the state to reach Bellary on the midnight of August 14.

Pandya dead

Avinash C Pandya, founder secretary general of Indian Federation of Small & Medium Newspapers, expired on July 30 following a massive heart attack. The 80-year-old deceased leaves behind a wife, two daughters and a son.
