RPI divided over Paswan's diktat on renaming Dadar
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, Aug 14: The Republican Party of India is in a quandary over its position vis-a-vis Union Railway Minister Ram Vilas Paswan's move to Dadar station as Chaityabhoomi Terminus, even as the deadline set by the Minister comes to an end on August 15. ``We will decide our stand once the dust settles down'', said a senior RPI leader. The leadership feels that once the initial euphoria dies down, it would be easier to wriggle out of the controversy they never wanted to generate. While Paswan's tryst with the State's Dalit movement is seen here as an assault on exclusivity of Ambedkarism, a section of Dalit activists, however, feel its time they open up to the national political mainstream. No matter how symbolic or socially inconsequential the renaming issue may be, it has appealed to a large section of neo-Buddhists. The Dalit leadership has been working hard to assess the mood of the masses. On the other hand, the ruling coalition, which went on a renaming spree in the State after coming to power, stood exposed, when Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray said that Brahmin population of Dadar would not accept the renaming. However, no such consideration was given any weightage in the past instances of renaming. The battle line has been drawn over the issue which is expected to linger for at least some months, if not years.
