BMC to regularise mezzanines, lofts

MUMBAI, August 15: Municipal Commissioner of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Girish Gokhale today announced that all the mezzanine floors and lofts that existed from 1984 will be regularised by the BMC by levying a premium of Rs 50 per square feet. The municipal commissioner's announcement is expected to fetch substantial revenue to the civic exchequer and benefit hoteliers, restaurant owners, shops and commercial establishments. The BMC is reportedly agreed to the proposal. The issue of regularisation of mezzanine floors and loft was hanging fire for the last several years. The proposal will be submitted to the building proposal department under section 342 of BMC Act. Gokhale also announced that hutment dwellers, existing since 1985 would be given water supply and standby pipe would be installed if there are more than five persons in the hutment. The people in the metropolis will get 90 litres of water as against 45 litres presently supplied. This is being done as the water project has been completed and necessary pipeline commissioned.
