Felicitation

The Navin Khandwalla Memorial Committee of the India Folk Arts Foundation felicitated Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral, who has been a patron of this institution for 15 years, at a function held in New Delhi on December 21.

Appointed

Captain Sunil Krishnaji Damle, NM, assumed command of the navy's premier aircraft carrier INS Viraat, out at sea recently. The ship, which was under operational deployment, recently returned to the Mumbai harbour.

An alumnus of National Defence College, New Delhi, Damle was commissioned into the Navy on December 19, 1970. He is a Sea Harrier pilot and a qualified flying instructor.

Musical nite

The Bimal Roy Memorial Committee has organised a musical nite on January 7 to mark the 30th death anniversary of the legendary film maker, which falls on the next day. The function will feature artists like Manna Dey, Chhaya Ganguly, Nitin Mukesh and Kavita Krishnamurthy. The committee, headed by Roy's daughter Rinki Bhattacharya, will also honour veteran film maker Kidar Sharma.

Award

Damayanti Shashikant Deokar received the Rashtrapati Ranger Award from President K R Narayanan for best Ranger of the National Rally of Bharat Scouts and Guides at a function held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi on December 10. Damayanti is a student of SIES College, Sion. She is presently heading the Captain Laxmi Guide Company, Sion of the Central Railway State, Mumbai Division.

Lifetime awards

Members of the Kapoor family and music director Kalyanji were felicitated for life time contribution to the film industry by the Giants International at a function last night. Shammi and Randhir Kapoor recalled their father's contributions to cinema at the function.

Forex seized

Three passengers, including two Moroccan women, were detained by Customs Air Intelligence unit at Mumbai airport following the seizure of Rs 46.71 lakh in assorted foreign currency.

Said sources, the two women bound for Casablanca via Kuwait were detained on Sunday after foreign currency totalling Rs 9.71 lakh was recovered from their baggage. In another case, an Indian leaving for Abu Dhabi was picked up on Monday on suspicion. Officials recovered Rs 37 lakh in forex in the false top and bottom of his brief case. In a follow-up action, an accomplice, who handed over the currency to the Indian passenger, has been apprehended, the customs said.
