NEW DELHI, Dec 29: The Indian Airlines board has approved a proposal to scrap discounts being provided to students and defence personnel unless the respective ministries compensate the airline for the losses incurred on that account. At its meeting on December 18 the board said a formal proposal would be made to the Civil Aviation Ministry. The decision has been prompted by the extent of losses the airline suffers on account of these discounts.
It is estimated that the airline loses roughly Rs 16 crore every year from discounts to defence personnel, disabled, students and other award winners. The discounts to defence personnel costs it Rs 7.6 crore a year.
