Campaign period cut to 14 days

CHENNAI: The Election Commission has reduced the campaign period for the coming Lok Sabha polls from 20 to 14 days.

Disclosing this at a press conference here, the Chief Electoral Officer, Tamil Nadu, K A Mathew, said in the 1996 Lok Sabha elections, the Commission had given 20 days for electioneering after the withdrawal of nominations.

VDIS collections

MUMBAI: The Income-Tax department has made elaborate arrangements for Tuesday to receive declarations under the Voluntary Disclosure of Income Scheme (VDIS) following a ``walk out'' call given by officers and employees of the department in Mumbai. The Chief Commissioner of Income Tax V Muthuramalingam said necessary manpower is being made available at the 19 centres in the city as the flow of applications is expected to be ``heavy'' on the second last day of the deadline.

Train mishap

JHANSI: At least 22 people were injured when the New Delhi-bound Paschim Express rammed into a stationary goods train in thick fog at Chata in Jhansi division of Central Railway on Monday. The Mumbai-New Delhi Express collided with the detached bogies of the goods train 10 min after being flagged off from Chata station, a Central Railway official said. The accident occurred at 0915 hours, throwing one of carriages of the express train off the track.

Verma IYC chief

MUMBAI : Former corporator Narendra Verma has been appointed as joint secretary of the Indian Youth Congress by IYC president Satyajit Singh Gaikwad, a party statement said. Verma was earlier the president of the city unit of the National Students Union of India. His appointment was communicated to him by Gaikwad through a letter on Friday.

ISLAMABAD: Former Pakistani president Farooq Leghari, may float a new political party called the `Pakistan League' which is expected to include veteran leaders and dissidents from both the ruling Pakistan Muslim League and Pakistan Peoples Party. ÿ
