Kochi, Dec 30: Viswanathan Anand of India earned his second world chess title match appearance when he overcame a spirited challenge from Michael Adams (England) with a 3-2 victory in the World Chess Championship at Groningen today according to reports reaching here.When the four game tie-breaker series ended in a deadlock at 2-2 the sudden death blitz game was played in which Anand won in 65 moves of Caro-Kann Defence to go through to the final against Anatoly Karpov at Laussane in early January.
In the first game Anand had adopted the Caro-Kann Defence from the blackside and drew in 50 moves.
In the reverse game, Adams employed the Sicilian Defence against which Anand used the 3.f4 variation which is seldom used in match play before drawing in 34 moves.
In the fourth game Anand and Adams drew in 51 moves of a transposed Sicilian game.
Then in the five minute crunch game Anand won a pawn and kept the bishop pair to create passed pawns on either flanks to net the crucial
point.
