Jacques Kallis hit a maiden Test century as South Africa held off Australia's intimidating pace and spin attack to force a draw in the first test at Melbourne Cricket Ground yesterday. Kallis made 101 as the tourists batted out the fifth and final day to reach 273 for seven.
  Anand qualifies to meet Karpov
Viswanathan Anand of India earned his second world chess title match appearance when he overcame a spirited challenge from Michael Adams (England) with a 3-2 victory in the World Chess Championship at Groningen yesterday. Anand will play against Karpov in the final at Laussane in early January.

National champion Chetan Baboor outclassed Shan Key of China to claim the International Invitation Table Tennis Tournament which concluded in Dubai on December 28.
