  Vajpayee's "liberal law" thesis on gender concerns may irk allies
The Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) shadow Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee announced yesterday that if the party came to power it would make education for girls free up to graduation. He also reiterated the BJP's commitment to 33% reservation for women in Parliament and State Assemblies.
  CAT order on Cabinet Secy's extension stayed
The Delhi high court yesterday stayed till February 4 the order of the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) setting aside the second extension of T S R Subramaniam as cabinet secretary. A vacation bench of the court ruled that the CAT had no jurisdiction to stay an appointment made by the government on a public interest litigation.

UN sets up dept to pursue global disarmament
The United Nations, in a belated attempt at pursuing demilitarisation after the end of the cold war, is creating a new department to disarm the world at large. The creation of the new department -- the Department of Disarmament Affairs -- was unanimously approved by the 185-member General Assembly four days ago.
Advani sees South warming up for the BJP wave
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will gain a foothold in the Southern part of India in the coming Lok Sabha polls, if the words of party president L K Advani are to be believed. Advani yesterday expressed confidence that the BJP would make a dent in both Kerala and Tamil Nadu during the coming elections.

Pak to unveil new missile
Pakistan will unveil its newly-developed Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile (IRBM) "Ghauri" on March 23, the "Pakistan Day". The latest weapon in Islamabad's armoury will have a range of anywhere between 1,500 and 2,000 km, and can carry anti-tank warheads, apart from nuclear and chemical warheads.
Mir space station back in orbit after a dizzy spell
Russia's Mir space station returned to normal yesterday after the crew replaced part of a computer that had malfunctioned earlier. The malfunction had caused the vessel to go into a spin and lose power.
