  Frightened Assam villagers flee to the forest at night
The automatic weapons had fallen silent. Everything was quiet on the first day of the year. The bodies of the seven villagers who were gunned down by militants on the evening of December 31 at Jagannath-Jhar-village were awaiting post-mortem. Some relatives sobbed quietly as Army and Central Reserve Police Force jawans took position at the site of the massacre.
  US working on new arms control plan
The United States is working on a new arms control plan that would create an international clearing house for laser tests in space. The purpose of the clearing house would be to prevent damage to sensitive American communications and spy satellites.

Malaysia to deport one million foreign workers
The Malaysian government has mooted a number of radical steps to conserve its foreign exchange reserves and revive its economy. The first measure being considered is deportation of one million foreign workers. Another move under consideration is a ban on overseas vacations for ministers.
Pak to unveil new missile
Pakistan will unveil its newly-developed Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile (IRBM) "Ghauri" on March 23, the "Pakistan Day". The latest weapon in Islamabad's armoury will have a range of anywhere between 1,500 and 2,000 km, and can carry anti-tank warheads, apart from nuclear and chemical warheads.

Kenyan EC says Moi has done enough to return to power
The head of Kenya's Election Commission yesterday said that President Daniel Arap Moi had secured enough votes to be declared winner in the country's Presidential and Parliamentary elections. He, however, said official declaration of Moi's and his Kenyan African National Union's (KANU) victory would have to wait till counting of ballots is over.
Armed Lankan soldiers search Express staffer's home
Armed soldiers searched the home-cum-office of Express correspondent, Nirupa Subramaniam, on Saturday afternoon. Calling it a random exercise, around 10 soldiers with automatic weapons, led by a Colonel and two officers, barged into her house without waiting for permission, stating that they wanted to search the premises.
