  HC notices to Swamy, CBI on Chidambaram's plea
The Delhi high court yesterday issued a notice to Janata Party president Subramaniam Swamy on Union finance minister P Chidambaram's plea for initiation of proceedings against the former for allegedly fabricating documents in a complaint case. Justice A K Srivastava, who also issued notice to the CBI, posted the revision petition filed by Chidambaram for further hearing on January 9.
  Request on Bofors under scrutiny
Channel Islands is reportedly studying the Indian request for the freezing of three "Bofors accounts" and identifying their holders. India last month sent a letter rogatory to the British authorities seeking cooperation in freezing of the three accounts in which part of the alleged Rs 640-million Bofors pay-off is suspected to have been transferred from Swiss banks.

Court bar on supercop Gill's tipsy public encounters
A Chandigarh court has ordered former Punjab Police chief K P S Gill to pay Rs two lakh compensation to a lady IAS officer Rupan Deol Bajaj for outraging her modesty, banned him from taking intoxicants in public and released him on a probation for three years. The compensation is in lieu of three months imprisonment slapped on him by the court of Chief Judicial Magistrate on August 6, 1996.
Vacation pictures invaded privacy, says Clinton
United States President Bill Clinton on Monday said that he felt his privacy was invaded when cameramen hid in bushes to take pictures of him and First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton during their vacation in the US Virgin Islands. Two-person television crews for NBC and CBS and a photographer for Agence France Presse (AFP) hid in bushes and captured the President and First Lady in swimsuits at a beach on Magens Bay.

Tigers out on prowl in Jaffna to disrupt polls, says Lankan Army
The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) leadership has sent fresh batches of well-trained guerrillas to the northern Jaffna peninsula seeking to disrupt the local body elections scheduled for January 29. The new batches of infiltrators have been sent by LTTE chief Prabhakaran at the instance of Pottu Amman, the intelligence chief and Jaffna commander.
Army widows set to don husband's uniform
Five years ago, women stormed an exclusive male bastion and donned olive green fatigues for the first time in India to become commissioned officers in the Indian Army. Now, they are at the threshold of yet another trail-blazing accomplishment. Sabina Singh and Ravinderjit Randhawa, wives of Army officers who were killed while on active service last year, are all set to don the uniforms that their husbands once wore.
