VIJAYAWADA, January 15: Rohan Gavaskar's 74 (93b, 141m, 6x4), Tariq-ur-Rehman's attractive unbeaten 55 (47b, 94m, 4x4, 1x6) and a brisk 75-run sixth wicket partnership between them, enabled East Zone to score an emphatic win over complacent South Zone in the Deodhar Trophy one-day limited overs league match here on Thursday.Electing to bat after winning the toss, South Zone registered 255 for 8 in the allotted 50 overs. East Zone overhauled the rival tally with four-wickets to spare.
On a dry wicket, offering little assistance to bowlers, South Zone skipper Anil Kumble's worries compounded with a string of sloppy fielding in the crunch situation. The initial setback of Nikhil Haldipur's exit did not deter Debang Gandhi (21), Robin Morris (28) and Saba Karim (23), as all of them came out some valuable contributions.
At one stage, East Zone were 133 for five. However, the going become tough for South Zone, as young turks Gavaskar and Rehman began to frustrate the rival
attack.
