Yarn prices shoot up

ENS ECONOMIC BUREAU
MUMBAI, January 15: Yarn prices shot up suddenly last week in the textile market, hitting synthetic-fibre makers whose price realisation has crashed 15 per cent over the past few weeks.

Yarn prices were reduced in the first week of January from about Rs 60 per kg to Rs 55 per kg and synthetic-fibre prices were cut from Rs 43.5 per kg to Rs 41 per kg.

It is believed failure of some small producers to deliver has sparked off a sudden price rise of yarns in the domestic market. Texturised yarn prices have shot up to Rs 83 per kg and cone prices have climbed between Rs 15 per kg and Rs 50 per kg as weavers have begun stocking up.

Synthetic fibre prices have crashed 15 per cent in four weeks in the country owing to the south-east Asian crisis.
