Plea for CBI probe into custodial death

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NAGPUR, Jan 15: The Nagpur Bench of Bombay High Court has directed notices before admission to the Nagpur Commissioner of Police and two others in response to the petition filed by a woman demanding a CBI probe into the alleged custodial death of her husband and seeking compensation.

Justices S P Kulkarni and J N Patel, comprising the Bench which heard the petition for admission, directed that the notices are returnable in three weeks. State Home Secretary and a Deputy Superintendent of Police of CID (Crime) are the other two respondents.

The petitioner, Shashikala alias Pratibha, has stated that her husband, Bharat Natthuji Lokhande, was picked up by the MIDC police on the night of October 11 last year following a complaint against him lodged by her sister-in-law, Manda, in a domestic quarrel.

She stated that Bharat was badly beaten up by the police personnel first at her house and later in custody. The following morning, the police informed her that Bharat had died. The petitioner has alleged that she was being pressurised by Dy SP Jadhav of the State CID Crime not to pursue the matter and accused the latter of shielding the policemen. Shashikala has demanded a compensation of Rs 10 lakh to enable her maintain her four children, aged between 3 and 11. She is also seeking a government job in view of a decision by the National Commission for Human Rights in custodial death matter.

RSS, CONG Workers clash: Timely action by the police prevented an ugly flare up between Congress Seva Dal supporters and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) activists at Badkas Chowk here, on Wednesday evening. The Seva Dal, incensed over RSS supremo, Prof Rajendra Singh's (Rajju Bhaiyya) remarks on Sonia Gandhi, had organised a protest march from Devadia Congress Bhavan to Sangh building, the RSS headquarters. They had also planned to demonstrate in front of the building against the RSS chief calling Sonia ``a white skinned foreigner who happened to marry an Indian'' in his address in the recently concluded RSS camp here.

As their programme was pre-planned, a large number of RSS activists had gathered at Badkas Chowk apparently to prevent the Seva Dal supporters from reaching the Sangh Building.
