Mixed fortunes for Doshi

MUMBAI, January 15: It was day of mixed luck for Ankit Doshi as he lost in the under-16 quarter-finals but entered the under-14 semifinals of the Chembur Gymkhana Open Junior State Ranking tennis tournament today.

Third seed Sujay Mahadevan shocked the top seeded Doshi in three sets 7-6 (7-2), 5-7, 6-0 in the quarter-finals while fifth seed Gaurav Kumar also caused a minor upset, beating fourth seed Mehul Kamdar 6-3, 6-2.

Doshi struggled to get past sixth seed Rishi Behl in the under-14 quarter-finals 7-5, 6-3. At 4-3 in the first set, Behl broke Doshi to lead 5-3, But he lost the next four games and the set.

Mahadevan capped his winning run with a semi-final entry in the under-14 also. Mahadevan beat Jai Mehta 7-5, 6-1 in the quarters.

Results

Boys' under-16 (QF): Ankit Joglekar bt Saurabh Kohli 6-2, 6-1; Vivek Jhaveri bt Rishi Behl 6-2, 6-0; Sujay Mahadevan bt Ankit Doshi 7-6 (7-2), 5-7, 6-0; Gaurav Kumar bt Mehul Kamdar 6-3, 6-2.

Under-14 (QF): Ankit Doshi bt Rishi Behl 7-5, 6-3; Saurabh Kohli bt Krishank Shah 6-1, 6-3; Krishne Tanna bt Rushang Patel 6-1, 6-3; Sujay Mahadevan bt Jay Mehta 7-5, 6-1.

Under-12: Devang Shah bt Kushal Modi 9-2; Krishank Shah bt Dhiraj Rai 9-3; Akshay C bt Harsh Mehta 9-4; Keshavan Narsimhan bt Allan Moses 9-4.

Girls' u-12 (semis): Lizenka Pereira bt Kanisha Mehta 9-2; Tulsi Mehta bt Sagarika Phadke 9-2.
