Don't alienate north-eastern denizens, says scholar

EXPRESS NEWSLINE
CHANDIGARH, January 15: A three-day lecture on North-East concluded with a discussion on "Ethnic Conflicts in North-Eastern part of the country".

Speaking on the occasion, M.N. Karna, head of the department of Sociology, North-Eastern University, Shillong highlighted the patterns of ethnic conflicts. ``Though Bodos are demanding Bodoland by dividing Assam in two parts, Nagas have been raising the issue of separate nation on the basis of self-determination and inalienable territorial rights from the beginning,'' he said.

All the people belonging to the North-East region constituted one community, fought for separate state, but could not achieve it, he opined. ``But now the internal conflicts have emerged within the community.''

According to Karna, the solution lies in making them feel that they are part of India.
