CHANDIGARH, Jan 15: Students of the Geology department of the Panjab University sat in dharna outside the department to register their protest against the behaviour of one of the faculty members. The students of M.Sc (I), who were to be taken for the geological field training programme by Dr A.D. Ahluwalia alleged that he was delaying the trip. One of the student leaders Jaswant Singh alleged that since he was contesting in the forthcoming senate elections, academic interest of students were being ignored. They were shouting slogans and demanded that the trip be taken in January and by any teacher other than Dr Ahluwalia. When they asked him to advance the trip or opt out of it, he misbehaved with them, he added.
Dr Ahluwalia while denying any differences with the students said that students are being instigated by the others. He said that it was on their request that he had even agreed to take the trip at the end of this month.
The issue was later resolved, when following a meeting of the academic
committee, Dr Ahluwalia declined to accompany the tour on grounds of ill-health. A notice signed by the chairman was subsequently put up informing the students about his inability to accompany the tour.
